I caught a little jumping spider and he made a web in his enclosure, kind of like a hammock. Is this just a retreat or a sperm web, like a tarantula's?

Cool! I think it's a phidippus sp. It has the green mandibles and markings of one, but instead of being white like the audax, they're orange. I caught it in Poughkeepsie NY. It's going to freeze soon and I was thinking of wintering him in my room as a little desktop pet.

sweet! have fun then! they are extremely fun to keep as pets, very hardy too. eat anything, any size seems like:D i once had a P audax get loose in my room, didn't think much of it, but then found it about 4-5 months later! crazy little guy! survived all that time :eek: (and i know it wasn't a different spider cause we don't have them where i live, close, but not in my stretch of the woods)

oh- if you get the chance, and have a laser pointer, go in at night and see if he'll play with the light, mine did, chased the little dot around the cage, it was fun{D

oh, and look up phiddipus on google and see if you can identify a species!

not if it's orange. lots of phidippus have green chelicerae.

Well here's the weird thing, it looks like a p. audax. It has green chelicerae and the exact markings of an audax (leg stripes, opisothosmatic stripes). Oh wait, I just found it. IT IS A P. AUDAX!

It's the cutest little thing too, so much more active than a tarantula. He hunts down crickets like spiderman or something. I'm thinking of naming him Parker.

hmmm, interesting. i can't seem to see the pic/link you posted. :( i've never seen an orange p audax before, but maybe that's just me, they could be out there i guess.
i know it can get confusing b/c so many phidippus are orange. see if you can post a picture again please!!

Yep, that is a P.audax.
I have several of these with the white and orange markings.

Yeah, she's definitely cute. I think I could have been more clear about the markings and such not, sorry for that. Any advice about enclosure size, humidity, etc?

haha, it's all good! audax are very hardy. very. you really can't kill them unless you really try.:D um, just make sure it's well fed (that won't be hard since you'll find yourself wanting to throw everything you can find in there just to watch it hunt!{D ) i usually put some drops on the web or mist once a week, just make it like you found it! enclosure size doesn't really matter. unless you want to make it fun for the spider and fun to look at. and find it a mate! hahaha, enjoy!

Yeah, I'm having problems with that already. It's been half a week and I've thrown in a fruit fly and two pinheads just to see him take them down. I'll go find a nice clear mason jar, make it look pretty. I'm not sure about finding a mate, it's already getting kind of cold. I've named him/her Parker (I'm a spidey fan).

oh- and if it doesn't seem to like glass as much, well- i've always used clear plastic containers. but shouldn't be a problem, my preference for all my spideys is plastic, but it makes no difference...
