View Full Version : mystery spider
This one has had me scratching my head for several years now...maybe someone here can I.D. it...anyway, sorry for the generally poor image quality, it was take with my first digital camera, an old sony mavica that saved to a floppy disk. What is correct, and also what makes me lost is the color. As you can see, the abdomen is a bright "coppery-metallic purple". and the cephalothorax is bright "bronze/copper metallic". I have not altered these pictures at all, and the colors were very distinct in real life. Here is the other information I can provide...
Found in Tennessee, USA
legspan about 3/4"
very fast...( I tried to catch it for about 45 minutes)
As a biologist, and arachno-hobbyist, I'm curious if anybody can help me out here...Thanks in advance...ECO

It is definitley a male, probably mature, which will make IDing from this picture next to impossible without a good shot of the eyes. The color of mature males often varies widley from the females. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think it's a male Corinnidae. This is based mainly on the cephlothorax shape and alignment to the abdomen along with the leg allometry. Could be a Clubionidae, or something close to that group (or realistically it could even be a weird Orb Weaver male shot at a funny angle...).

Hey ECO! Welcome to AB!!
It looks like a male Philodromus marxi, judging by this image:

Adult male Philodromus marxi, or adult male Philodromus at least.

The one and only! :)
After finding several other pictures that I took of this critter...and playing with them on photoshop, I'd have to agree with you...it's Philodromus marxi. Congrats to y'all for helping me with my mystery spider. ECO
