Dunno the species, but why is it standing in water?

It's not, it's the reflection of the glass.
nevermind, someone in IRC identified it as a wolf spider. Thanks anyway though :)

How big is it, and where is your friend located?

Post a picture from the top down, so we can see any patterning on the head/abdomen. And post in the True Spiders section. Its a wolf spider, possibly Hogna. Also, tell where it was located.

fishing spiders look very much like wolf spiders... only they are bigger than wolf spiders. If the spider's legspan is larger than a quarter chances are it's a fishing species and not a wolf.

That's pretty vague (spelling? I'm swedish and a bit tipsy) mate... Some wolfies gets a legspan of 4 inches....
Better way to identify it is the eye pattern. This seems to be a wolf spider, and not a dolomedes sp. Take a look at the eye pattern in both pics and compare them.

Wolf spider.. The legs on a fishing spider attach at different angles, somewhat similar to a huntsman. And they don't always need to be near water. One time I was in a forest in northern Michigan and I removed a piece of loose bark from a tree only to uncover the monstrosity beneath, which was as mean as cat's piss. It pounced on me - a good metre long leap - and I did some kind of slow motion Matrix dive as I raised my collection container and it landed inside with a thud. That thing scared the excrement out of me and was clearly not related to the specimen shown above. :worship:

Lol yeah, I love my 2 fishing spiders :) got 2 dolomedes fimbratus (only one that's common in sweden). They're beautiful, and feeding time is a show, sprinting on the water to grab the fly that I drop on the surface in a split second.
Here's a few pics of my darlings:
The smaller one (regenerated her leg at a molt, but it's half the size of the rest, second pic is post molt with bad quality):
