Cool spiders!

I'm not very good at identifying true spiders. My guess would be some type of Nephila sp. on the second pic?

Are these two pics different spiders? They look different to me.

Hello. The first one is a female argiope, do you have a pic of the front?, :D . the second spidr looks like a type of orchard spider, Leucauge sp?.

The one in the first pic is freakin' awesome! Argiope, eh? Anyone know if the Argiopes found in Venezuela are much different from the Argiopes found in the US? I love the way that one is resting it's legs! I would love to get ahold of some of those to breed! I would try with the ones around here, but I'm not sure what to keep them in really. Seems like they need a LOT of space! Not to mention I probably couldn't tell one male Argiope from another! :?

This are spiders from a friend house, they are really nice and big. Yes, the first one is a female, next time I will get a front picture. Is yellow, black and brown. The second one have some green and orange

Hell. Its very easy to tell males from females, males are usually about 1/2 inch and brown, Argiopes do very well in captivity anddont need a lot of space as long as they can climb 2 sides and build a web, hopfully te Argiope above will make an egg case :D. Im raisng Argiope argentata ad im waiting for a large female to mak an egg case. There should be lotsa cool spiders in venezuela.

Yes, I know. I can tell a male from a female. What I meant, though, is one male species from another male species. There are numerous species of Argiope, aren't there?

Yeah thats a little more diffecult as you would have to look for dull markings that resemble the female. Male argiopes look like young females only browner, you can sometimes find the males in webs next to the females. When the male argentata mates with a female they very quickly lock on and look criptic like a little brown plop, then the females eats him after :8o .

Do you know if the males' markings match the females' markings, species to species, only duller? Is that what you're saying? Or are the markings on the males different in any way, other than being duller?

I've seen the males hanging around the females' webs at times.

In the Argiope genus, do the females eat the males every time after breeding? Or do the males attempt escape at all?

as an example im looking at a young female argentata and the red markings that you see in the adualts this 1/2 young female has only with more markingsrunning to the carapace/head, the extra markings are a more orangish collor, a argentata male will also have these markings only a metalic brown, in the male the head also is a metalic brown collor, so the male argentata's ive seen show the same pattern as young femaleof the same size. Nephila male spiders can sometimes show the same pattern as adualt females though then gradually turn all just dark brown.

I guess the foolproof way is to look for males lingering around adult females, capture them, and get to know both really well (seeing as the males are slightly different and change with time)? We need an online source showing both males and females of the Argiope species. Like a webpage dedicated to Argiopes and other orbweavers for spider breeding enthusiasts. That would be way cool!
