The thought of that scares me silly!!!! I can't imagine the horror of having a bunch of cops or animal control officers or whatever they are called, knock down my door, and then walk out with all of my babies!!!!!! *shudder*

I also would, being just down the road near Omaha, NE. There are plenty of us in this area, we could all share.

We don't either, I wouldn't want to live in an area which does. This type of ignorance really angers me.

Well their paper is run about as poorly as their damn city hall. i just spent about 30 mins trying to post a frikkin comment and it just dissapeared down the drain. That left me more angry than reading the story did! I'm never going to Sioux City now and if i do i'm bringing 1000 B lateralis and leaving them in the bathroom of city hall!

(Yes, that was a joke. I'm more resposible than that Mr Federal Wildlife Officer)

Hmmm....I tried to post a comment, but it won't accept it. Good job getting on there Paul and setting the record straight a little. I despise people who rant about something that they aren't educated about.

Talked to the Souix City Animal Control about 20 minutes ago. Lady said there is a reptile group out of Des Moines, IA who are going to take all 15 of the tarantulas. When I told her I was with the NE Tarantula Enthusiest's Club (N-TEC), she sounded kind of disappointed they weren't coming to me. (I had left a msg early this am, but got no return call.)

Does anyone know anything about this Des Moines group??

Funny, I found the thread posted initially on Fark and once I looked in the comments thread, most ppl there said the exact same things as here. Lotsa people found spiders to be interesting and found it dumb that the police came and took them away. Seems silly. I am glad that someone close by looked into adopting the buggers. Critters like those would never pose a threat to the environment once winter came around. I think it should be part of every science class to familiarize people with spiders and other insects more closely. Would have saved some misunderstandings I bet....

I left a bit of a reply, myself....
It disappeared right into the ether...go figure.

First your choice of dog....then your choice of tank pet...then your choice of car...and your choice of clothes.....
BSL affects everyone. The mentality of our lawmakers and loudmouthed neighbors with irrational fears should be feared.
It applies equally to all of our pets.
Our freedoms are quietly slipping away, while we bow to the fears of idiots. :wall:

THAT scares me.

Poor people! If someone came and took away all of my Ts I would be devastated!

What really gets me is when the said that Ts are "venomous" and "dangerous"

Yikes, fellas!
I happen to agree with your views completely...but this kind of public response just gives the phobic a**munches that caused this to happen in the first place, another reason to believe that tarantula owners are dangerous extremists who must be stopped..."for the children's sake". Get my drift? We need to appear as the educated, decent people that we are. Only that will get through to the lilly livered, spineless pansies that make the local ordinances...
Don't get mad - get EVEN. Take their jobs away..vote them out.

BTW: I live in Michigan. Militia, anyone.........? Hehehehe:wicked:

i understand but this wasn't created to eventually have our lives micromanaged by any govt we have a republic not a mobacracy its meant to protect individual rights not majority rights. i don't care if someone is dumb enough to think tarantulas are going to kill them so i must sacrifice my hobby.

Too bad our govmnt. seems to have forgotten the recipe for freedom, huh? Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign to this City Council, and force them to expose their own lack of understanding of the laws as set forth by this Original Standard? I agree absolutely that we should be able to own what we want, on property we own and pay taxes for. Provided that we don't misuse our freedoms to hurt the things and people we are supposed to be looking after.....
My guns, my Pitbull and my tarantulas are my responsibility. It's my right to own them and it's also my right; under the fine document that you've just reminded us of; to be left alone about them, from pushy, overbearing lawmakers and neighbors. Otherwise - why did we bother to make our own country and laws in the first place?

If overbearing neighbors can force new laws...then I hereby officially and publicly declare my deep seated and overwhelming fear of pink plastic flamingos. They should be outlawed immediately. They give me the willies.....

I also tried to post a comment, which never showed up. After looking through the city codes, I have yet to see where they have defined Ts as a dangerous animal. I checked our local codes, and they only include wild cat and dog species, including foxes, coyotes, etc. as wild animals. I would like to see them justify taking my Ts and scorpions into custody.

Sorry! After more digging, I did find the ordinance.
"Dangerous animal" means and includes any animal which is not naturally tamed or gentle; or which is of a wild nature or disposition; or which is capable of killing or inflicting serious injury upon human beings and having known tendencies, individually or as a species, to do so; or which, because of its size or other characteristics, would constitute a danger to human life or property if it is not kept or maintained in a safe manner or in secure quarters, including, but not limited to, the following animals, which shall be deemed as dangerous per se:

Bears, wolves, wolf hybrid dogs, foxes, coyotes; lions, tigers, panthers, lynx, bobcats, elephants, bison, poisonous snakes and spiders, alligators, crocodiles, anacondas, pythons, boa constrictors, and piranhas.

Doesn't that also include ALL lizards, rats, mice, and birds, which are also not naturally tamed and gentle, but have become so over many years of keeping just like captive bred tarantulas? I have had much worse bites from my rats and cockatiels than my Ts could ever inflict.

if it is not kept or maintained in a safe manner or in secure quarters
