It's no faker, it's a subadult male black widow.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh snap
btw, now that i know that, would by any chance a black female widow be around if a male is hanging around
Not necessarily in close proximity, as he's not mature and so wouldn't have sought his mate yet. However, if you found one widow, you certainly should be able to find more.

around our new office, i love taking pictures of the spiders around -- hanging around the plants (plus we live in the country, and it's such a broad open area)
i hope to find one, id love to take pics of it
might even want to capture it for a day; then let it go

Aye... No other spiders have any markings that look anything like hourglasses...do they?

It's not quite that simple. To the untrained eye, I give you the ventral marking of Steatoda borealis:

But to the trained eye, yes, that is an obviously Latrodectus marking.

Really? Go to Mexico and you can see an all black species...no hourglass.
Chris
I think the point is: If there is a clear hourglass, then it's a latro.
probably male Latrodectus hesperus (Chamberlin&Ivie).

Definitively a male hesp ...another molt or 2 to go.

i think she might be gravid. in fact, i think i got a sac from her a few months ago... i'll feed her and see if she pops one out. i'll try to get a pic too.

here she is (finally ), sorry it took so long. with the flash, now i can see she has a little tiny red dot on the top. hard to see without good light. she was a little fiesty and actually almost tagged me when i let her go, good for a racing heartbeat...

I wonder if shes old ...if she produced a sac a while ago and has not done so since. ?? Hope she gives ya another sac! ...Might be a good time to cool her down for a while... I just put mine outside at night (finally cooling down round here).

maybe that's why... advice taken, will cool her down soon. she is big right now, so i'll keep pumping food her way, maybe she'll pop one out before cold.
