Oke, here is where I've been looking..

In lush bamboe rainforests and pine forests I have been scraping the sides of small trail cuts, especially where there is moss. However, I have yet to find a burrow. Small macrothele were all over the place in a pine forest today (I even caught one by accident when I took some substrate back).

What am I doing wrong? Since there are over 50 species accounted for in China (Including Liphistius) that ranges from south of me to much further north of me and that I have been looking in protected forest areas I believe that they must be here. Do they prefer more vertical areas or flatter. Dry areas or moist? Under leaf litter? I have tried all.

I just must find these trapdoors! I think they are awesome and want to specialise in breeding the Chinese species (When I find them) ever since I have seen some Youtube videos, heard about their aggression, and seen Jeff_H's amazing set-ups. Thanks to anyone who can give me any suggestions at all. Since I am dedicating a lot of energy to this project it's only a matter of time..

I'm not sure about China, but in California you look on slopes on the north side, usually in shade, but sometimes in full sun if there's a lot of weeds growing. Moist or dry depends on the species. Good luck with your hunt.

Best,

Chuck

North... I never thought of that.. But doesn't moss only grow on the north-facing slopes? So, since I have been looking in moss I must have been looking on the north-facing slope? :?

No moss will grow everywhere its moist to wet with shade. Direction doesn't matter.

Best,
