I found a spider in my kitchen. It looked pretty cool, so I snatched it into a nice clear container. I have no pictures of it yet, and have no knowledge about spiders at all. It is about one cm long, built squarely. It seems to have a sturdy body, not a long, lanky one. It is black with some small, faint orange markings on its abdomen and faint white stripes on its legs. I have been feeding it crickets. It has now built a web. The web is kind of like a hammock against the container lid, creating a platform for the spider to rest between the web and the lid. But it does not seem to use webs to catch prey. When it recognizes the cricket, it creeps up to about 1-2 inches, and leaps on it, somersaulting around until the cricket has been subdued. I live in Illinois by lake Michigan. These guys have been appearing frequently in lawns around here, building thick, sprawling webs across grass.

Anyone have any idea what it is?

Sounds like (Phidippus clarus) perhaps because of the red.

I'm from Lake Forest--do you know where that is? I've seen the type of spider you are talking about, and I have no clue what it is.
