lol at you expecting quality from a 2 megapixel camera. and that smiley is common on Araneus
dorsal view. the jar distorts her a bit

100% Araneus, 99.9% Banded orb (Neoscona crucifera)

I think I have to disagree though this is not my place to. But after looking at pics of Araneus abdomen and looking at this pic they look identical. I may be wrong though so correct me if I am.

No, I meant Araneidae (the fricken family)not Araneus (another genus), It is Neoscona however.
Slip of the type and...*sigh* jeff h is correct lol

So what is it that makes it a Neoscona? Is there a distinct feature that is present in the genus?

Neoscona are slightly hairier, IMO. But it is a Neoscona, for sure.

Pfff, all I did was say "yes, because." Crpy and Jeff_h gave you the ID.
But, if you compare Areaneus with Neoscona, I think you'll notice that N. sp. have rougher, hairier/ hoary appearance, whereas Araneus have more like a few bristles/ sensory spines on them. Just my observation, but that's how I distinguish.
