they make like 6ft webs. they are much better suited to life outside IMO.

Have them all over here in Louisiana too...I kept one in my spare bedroom earlier this summer. I posted a thread about it but never really followed up with pics or anything. It spun a few large webs (nice golden tint too), I fed it caterpillars and grasshoppers I would catch in my garden and it seemed to be doing fine for about 3-4 weeks until it suddenly died one day. Not sure what happened...old age (it was about a 4"LS, not the largest I've ever seen but a decent size), ingested some pesticide (I don't use pesticides or any chemicals but I'm sure the farmer who has a huge wheat field across the road does), or what.

I've seen a few small children stuck in their webs with a happy and fat spider lurking nearby ;) j/k...their webs are large at times (I've seen them spanning neighborhood roads overhead) and some strands are very sticky but hardly strong enough to really snare a person.

the particular one in the photo is an asian species of the nephila genus that supposedly gets a legspan of over 10" and occasionally does ensnare small birds in its web.
