A few weeks ago I ordered 3 spiders from SSW - a 4" female H. lividum, a 4" female G. rosea, and a 1.5" B. smithi spiderling. Jason responded promptly to my email saying they had all of those spiders in stock and could ship the next day. I paid up and he sent out a box the next day. He told me that he also included a 1/4" B. auratum freebie because the colors on the cobalt blue were very dark (just needs to molt). Usually they ship USPS express mail, but I requested Fedex since they are much more reliable in my opinion. That cost me an additional $5.

The box was delivered the next day. All of the deli cups were packed securely inside, with 2 heat packs. The H. lividum and G. rosea were both securely packed inside their cups, and they were both fine. Unfortunately, there was hardly any packing material in with the B. smithi. Its abdomen had ruptured during shipment and it was dead. The B. auratum freebie was also dead, although it was well packed.

I emailed Jason and told him about the 2 DOAs. He seemed genuinely disappointed and offered to send me a replacement. A few days later, he told me that he would be driving through Atlanta (where I live) and offered to meet somewhere and give me a replacement, to save on shipping costs. We met up about a week later, and he gave me a replacement for both the B. smithi and the B. auratum (which I wasn't expecting). Both of the spiders were in great shape and are now living happily in their new homes.

Overall I'd say I had a very pleasant experience with SSW. Their stock and prices are great, and Jason did a great job of dealing with a bad situation. I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again in the future.

I just received my order from SSW (Jason) this morning. The shipping company did not deliver the package overnight like they were scheduled, which was not Jason's fault or in his control. However, the two sub-adult G.pulchras, male and female, arrived in perfect shape. I'm sure it was because of the care in packing that was taken. I also received a freebie that I was not expecting, a B.auratum s'ling, also packed well and arrived alive. Thanks, Jason, for the nice service. All the communications was prompt and informative. I even requested pictures and they were sent right away. SSW is definitely on my "GOOD GUYS" list.

My only nitpick was being charged 25$ shipping and seeing the label on my box said 18$ I feel somewhat stingy mentioning that, but being in college I find little bits like that add up.

Still I doubt that will put me off from ordering from them in the future. Very highly reccomended.

I ordered from SSW for the first time the other day. I called up Jason and verified that he had the spiders that I wanted (A. minatrix and T. trunculentus). He was very pleasant and answered a bunch of my questions. He seemed concerned that I might not be home to sign for the spiders, so I made arrangements to get them sent to my job. I got them the next day. The packing was fantastic was very happy to receive my spiders the next day. He even tossed in a freebie of a B. vagans. I can definately say that I will order from SSW again and would recommend others to give him a try too. They have a very nice selection.

Had the pleasure of dealing with Jason at SSW this week and no words can express the level of satisfaction that he delivered with these T's. The communication was prompt and concise from the initial e-mail all the way through the final e-mail. The delivery was on schedule and arrived exactly when he said it would. As for the T's, they were above and beyond the sizes they were supposed to be with nice plump rear ends. You could really tell they had been taken care of. All in all SSW was top notch and I won't hesitate to deal with them again.

In the end, I order an adult female Grammostola pulchra, an Ephebopus cyanognathus spiderling, and a Lasiodora parahybana spiderling. Included with my order, once it was shipped, was another spider I was thinking of ordering (now as a freebie): Avicularia minitrix! =D Needless to say, I was excited.

I bought My avic. versicolor from them at a reptile show in Slidell, LA. They both talked to me for 30-40 min showing me ALL thier stock they had with them, aswell as telling me the truth about the differ types of Ts. Correcting what another person had said. They had a table full of containers. On the left side of the table they had a Grammostola rosea on the left side, sitting ontop of a cup. On the right side of the table they had a Ephebopus murnius sitting out. It was the most beautiful spider i had ever seen. It was definately prettier than any pics i have seen. I had asked about it and he said she wasnt aggressive and showed me by picking her up. She crawled on his hand and up his arm. when he tried to switch her over she took off. Pretty quickly she jumped onto the table and to the ground toward the table next to them. Jason, Joel, the 2 guys at the table next to them, and I tried to round her up. she made it to the wall and slowed. He got her while she was on the wall. I have read that they are skittish and aggressive. Skittish I saw but agressive I didnt. Maybe it was just her. Great couple of guys, answered all my questions later on through email and phone calls. The purpose of me leaving down this feedback for you guys here is to show my appreciation. And most importantly it's what you deserved. It would only be fair for me to do this as I think you have earn yourself another potential customer.

Although this is my initial order with SSW. I was very impressed by the level of professionalism in this pair. I did the corresponding with Jason most of the time and later with Joel. Commuication were done over the phone and with emails and it was hassle free and reply is prompt.(I'm very particular in this)

I must say both of them are very polite and willing to go the extra miles to make sure your request are being met. Like the way I requested for my packing. My order was 2 Theraphosa apophysis slings. They were packed extremely well and very professionally which definately set a standard for everyone in this trade. Also, very well kept specimens.

Therefore, I would highly recommend SSW as one of your source of reliable tarantulas suppliers out their if you haven't try them out yet.

The tarantula I paid for was shipped the very next day. Through a post office mix up no fault of the dealer, the express package arrived 4 days late, with the spider dead. Jason was very courteous and professional during this event, answered all my questions and concerns through both phone and email speedily. They had the Brachypelma spp I've been wanting for a long time, and since I'm moving to mainly Brachy's and Pokey's now that I've been cutting back on having such a large number of different Ts... ive dealt with Joel once in terms of transaction but ive talked to him through PM, email and phone MANY times whenever i had problems with my spiders.

Joel's lightning fast replies and service shouldnt be ignored, so these days anytime i have serious concerns i email or call joel and he will listen and help you out and you wont be ignored. always.

im not saying other online dealers are bad its just that its very easy to get ahold of Joel when you need him (especially phone) and you will get answers, if he doesnt know he will try his best and its always a long very well thorough and not rushed answers through email or phone, and that makes me feel easy enough to talk to him and i dont feel bad taht im bothering him all the time with questions and i think thats a great relationship between a seller and a buyer. reliability, knowing that i will get my answer very soon when the time is urgent.

two dealers i found that are easy to get ahold of via email/pm/phone are Scott from SCR and Joel of SSW, and they rock.

i hope others understand i had to write this because ive had a bad month with my spiders and he helped me out big time by giving me advice and tips on how to better take care of the spiders that i didnt even buy from him! and i feel that i owe him this review, thank you Joel. :clap:

I ordered 4 slings from Joel on Monday. Three arrived in fine shape and look to be in excellent health. I also got a free L. parahybana sling who has eaten 2 small crickets in 2 days. Unfortunately, the B. vagans was DOA.

I contacted Joel and ultimately decided to upgrade the dead B. vagans to a G. pulchra sling. I also mentioned that I hadn't known of the Arachnoboards discount on my original purchase. Joel sent me the G. pulchra replacement for just the cost of reshipping even tho there was a $19 difference and included a small free B vagans.

First order (1/20/06)

This is my first experience with Southern Spider Works. I ordered a 3" C. fasciatum and it arrived in excellent condition. Due to a paperwork error the spider was shipped two days late, but to make up for it Jason included a free T. blondi sling. Would order again any day.

My express mail package "guaranteed next day delivery" arrived a day late, and then the package was not brought up to my apartment, instead a pick-up slip was left in my mailbox. So, basically because the post office screwed up the spiders were in a box for at least 48 hours when the overnight lows were around 25F.

Result? 3 warm happy spiders! Excellent packaging, I don't know if they would have made it otherwise.

A couple of weeks ago I recieved an order from southernspiderworks. Very nicely packed very nice animals and nice sizes and a very very nice freebie ;). Unfortuneately one of the little guys a B. boehmei I ordered had died during the shipment, and another spider a female G. pulchra I ordered was in a death curl, and died soon after. It was obviously something that just happened and was not the fault of southernspiderworks. Hehe so I took this chance to make a new order so Jason could send the replacements with. He let me know that he didn't have any more G. pulchra so I had a $90 credit.

So I put it towards the new spiders I was ordering (P. regalis, P. ornata, and H. maculata), well I got that order yesterday and let me tell you! They went above my expectations! Which were already good, I always knew they were good ;). The three spiders I ordered were already of really really good size, they were bigger than expected and I was very happy :). The replacement B. boehmei was much bigger than the original I ordered. I didn't measure the size the original was 1/4" if I remember and this one is 2+ inches. I didn't get an exact measurement but this one is showing the colors on the leg!

and this time as the freebie to help make up for the last order he sent, C. fimbriatus! One of the most awesome freebies ever...... well except for the freebie from the prior order which I won't say what it was so it doesn't cause him a lot of people asking for expensive freebies. I only mentioned this one because it was a "make up" freebie. But hey everone ordering from Southern Spider Works you can not go wrong! Jason was very good with the communication, and, although he did make a small mistake, initially, in the initial stages of my order, it was generously corrected. All 5 of my Ts have arrived safely (again, in spite ot the USPS); and have been fed, although only one (the A. genic. sling) has eaten so far (I just fed them about 5 minutes ago). His size estimates were fair for some; and somewhat conservative for the rest (ie several were larger than I would have expected). Just to add a few facts Maurice left out.

In the AD for the Scorps we clearly stated that this was a pre-order only and that the Scorpions may not arrive in the states for Several Weeks. And that we would make the import as soon as possible. During this I have been very clear that at any time that he wanted his money back i would refund it 100%.

At this point in time the order is still not here ....we do expect to receive it this following week on Wednesday. However we are still willing to refund Maurice's money at any time that he chooses. It was his decision to wait. And still in his last email to me ....all he wants is the Scorpions.....We have done all that we can in a situation that we had no control over. Bottom line is when your importing and exporting it sometimes takes time.

Im sorry Maurice that you feel the way you do and if you still can wait then we will ship your scorps to you as soon as they are in our hands if not let me know and i will refund your money. Also in your last email to me you stated you "don’t want to argue". That sounds good to me. Thanks!

They were very willing to spend time talking to me even though their table was mobbed with people. After hearing of all the freebies, I was a little disappointed not to find one in my box. Just scooped up the last of thier P. tigrinawesseli slings. Joel has been my main T supplier since I bought my first tarantula, and remains to provide me the best service after all of these years. Great communication, packaging (he taught me how to "properly" package Ts), and great tarantulas! And I always seem to get shipped too many..
Now that I look back on all of the interaction Ive had with Joel and Jason, I cant think of one negative experience. I even sat in a dark corner trying to think of something bad, and I just couldnt come up with anything. Ive got nothin'... they are truley an icon for all other dealers. :worship:

I just bought a 3/4 inch C. cyaneopubescens from Southernspiderworks. I initially chose them because they were one of the first that I found that had that species currently in stock and then decided to go with them after checking their feedback here and seeing how positive it was. I first contacted them on 7/9/07 and received my package today (7-12-07).

I was very happy with the layout of the site, the shipping price was a bit lower then many other places (for comparable shipping) and I was happy to see that they had temperature limits on when they would ship out, which let me know they care about their stock. The communication was also pretty good and I got all responses within 24 hours. They were also responsive to the fact that I wanted to receive the package this week while I would be on vacation and could sign for a package with ease.

The only thing that could have been better would be knowing when they actually shipped. I received an email saying that if I paid early within a particular day they would ship that morning, but got no confirmation that they actually had shipped. Still, it was not hard to figure out when to expect my package (and it was sent in a timely fashion), so this is not by any means a gripe.

I was extremely happy with the packing and the condition of the s'lings when I got them. They were quite secure, the one I ordered was actually slightly larger then I expected, and they are well proportioned and alert. I also appreciated the freebie (a G. aureostrata) and the schwag (a couple of pens and a cute little pen knife/multitool). I have gotten s'lings in trade before but this is the first time I've actually bought over the Internet and I'm really happy with the experience.

this was my second experience with southernspiderworks. i first bought from them at arachnocon in july, i bought an Avic. sp. that soon got sick after i got back home to az. i had posted a thread about the Avic. seeing if anyone knew what was wrong with it and it died the next week. southernspiderworks contacted me when they saw that i was having a problem and offered me store credit for the dead Avic. i just recieved my 4 new s'lings yesterday and they were all packaged amazingly well and are all doing great now. they were very nice and fast to respond though email and it was the best communication i've ever had with an online dealer.
if i ever expand my tarantula/scorpion collection further i will definitely be buying from southernspiderworks again.

After ordering online and having to wait and wonder if I was going to miss the mail delivery, or if the USPS was going to use my new invert parcel for a soccer ball, I found out that Southern Spider Works was only about 80 miles away from me! Oh happy day!:D I called Joel and we set up an approx. time that I could make it. He met me at the door and when we walked into the "spider farm" I was amazed. For someone that is used to only seeing 2 or 3 tarantulas at pet stores this was Paradise! Joel was great and had a lot of patience showing all he had in stock and helping me decide. All the T's seemed healthy and very well cared for and I left with 5 new purchases, a new H. Arizonensis scorp and a freebie B. Albopilosum.
I had spoken to Jason also and have emailed him several times about a few more tarantulas I saw that I am going back for. I will be leaving Joel and Jason more of my $$ in the future for the quality tarnatulas they have and personal service. If they don't have-I bet they can get it!

I ordered a 2" Female Brazilian Whiteknee on the 12th and it was shipped that day. Due to USPS's outstanding super fantastic track record my spider did not make it to my house. It ended up sitting in a post office 11 miles from my house for 7 days. I finally found the package and picked it up on the 19th. Imagine my surprise to find the spider alive and doing well. They packaged the spider bombproof. I will definitely order my next tarantula from them again. Just in case anyone was wondering I will use UPS or FedEx next time.

On Thursday, I received a baby G.pulchra. It was bright eyed & bushytailed so to speak & SouthernSpider Works double boxed this itsy bitsy teeny weeny baby! I've never seen such packing & such a huge box for such a tiny little thing. The heat pack was still warm & the little bug could not have been more comfortable. :) It traveled in the lap of luxury!!

The packing as stated was superb! The communication was superb! The price was great! The shipping was super fast ! (even though I had told them that they could take their time) Since I did not want a freebie sling, I had asked for something else if they had it & they were sooooo kind to oblidge. Fantastic!!!

I've ordered a few things now from SSW. This latest order was 3 G pulchra slings.

Both Joel and Jason stepped up to arrange that the package be held at the post office because I would not be able to get it otherwise this time. They went over the top. My only very minor problem is that Joel (who I was dealing with through email) did not have his phone VM set up - but that's minor as I called and spoke with Jason about the last leg of the set up. :)

Packaging is excelent. Big box, newspapers, small box, more newspapers... unwrap the vials that are packed with hollowed out ... erm I think paper towel. Spiders were perky and in good condition.

I also received a L. Parahybana sling freebie.

Overall very Positive. :)
