A little closer...

That's right, my first escape! (I feel so proud) I was about ready to rehouse this little guy and his two siblings but I suppose he couldn't wait.

This is how he got out.

I don't name many of my T's but I think this one will be called Chewbacca because he like to chewwww.

As escapes go I can't imagine one going any smoother. He made that little tube right at eye level so I saw him right away and recapture was a snap!

Yeah, not far at all. If you look at pic 1 his home was the shelf just below the small KK on the right, about 8" out of frame.

It's actually an amazing story, and your little guy is a keeper. I've had my big girls chew on their mesh lids, but nothing any smaller.

Welcome to the club.

It does seem odd that a sling chewed threw the screen. Is there a chance that you had a cricket in there and the sling never ate it? If the cricket goes uneaten, it might try to escape by biting through the screen. This has happened on a few enclosures, luckily I caught it before the T had a chance to escape as well.

btw, this happened on a t. violaceus enclosure and an s. calceatum enclosure 2x. How bad would it suck to have a s. calceatum on the loose? I wouldn't be afraid but its the rest of my family that would have a problem with it.:wicked: :shame:

This wouldn't be the first time i've heard of a T chewing through the bars, so to speak. I've never heard of a sling doing it though. That screen isn't very tough, it's only vinyl or whatever with little fibers in it. I cut it easily with paper scissors. There wasn't any spare prey in there, btw and i feed roaches anyway.

I'm glad this hasn't happened with anything feistier than a baby avic.

Hey, I just found another baby P. murinus in my kitchen the other day! He looked well fed too. {D

I had a p regalis chew through some fiberglass window screen a while back. Luckily I found the little @$#$ pretty easily, but it did make it half way across the house in two or three hours. It was found on the ceiling above the stairs.

it would be cool to have like a population of Avics roaming a spider room if it was kept at the proper temps and humidity.. make short work of any escapee roaches.

Hey it turns out this is just what happened except it was a B lateralis that chewed it's way out. I found him running around in the tub I keep my sling vials in whan I got home yesterday.

I have a couple three jumping spiders living in my dinning room. I brought them in from outside and they have been around for a couple of years.

I figured it was some kind of feeder. It just seemed improbable that a small sling could munch through the screen . Do T's even have the ability to do that, don't they lack any type of teeth or jaws to bite through it? I figured it would be pretty hard for a T to do any damage to the screen with only 2 fangs.

Yeah I wondered if you'd recognize those guys. They're coming along beautifully.

Actually i've heard of this happening plenty although not with a sling. T's have amazingly powerful fangs and can bite right through some things we'd need tools to cut. I recall a story I heard on here about a T blondi chewing his way through rat wire lid.

ummmm...now I'm nervous. I don't even think the screen that I use has wire in it.... I might have to bust the hot glue gun out and put a couple more layers of screen on lol.:)

What are you using, that fiberglass screen material like is pictured at the beginning of this thread? If so then yeah, you may want to get something stronger. If they can get through 1 layer of that stuff they'll get through several. Be they plastic jar tops, plexiglass cutouts or kk lids I use only solid tops for spiders bigger than a sling (say 2"+). I have on the other hand seen evidence of my B albo, E murinus, P cancerides and A anax all scratching and chewing at their lids.
