Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea what this is. I think it could be a huntsman, but I really don't know that much about true spiders. It was found running around on the celing, I'd guess it's body length is about an inch. Picture taken yesterday in Central Iraq. Thanks for your time.

Hi!
This looks like a Carparachne sp. male... but I am not sure. But I am really sure that the family of the spider is Sparassidae spp.

I appreciate the info. Unfortunately my boss, whose ignorance is outweighed only by his charm was convinced it was some kind of "super-recluse" and smashed it:( . And people wonder why I can't stand them.

That's a shame...but what a beautiful looking spider! It does look like some species of huntsmen to me as well.

Well, good luck to you out there. Didn't know we had Army bases up in AK! I just got back from the Persian Gulf at the beginning of this month. I was on a ship out in the gulf though, so it's not quite the same.
edit...just realized what your name was. hehe I love me some wheat beer...though that whole purity law has got to go! Hops rule!

Yep, I've been hooked on the hefeweizen ever since I was stationed in Der Vaterland.
Triggerman, I'm sorry to say he called the critter in question a (sigh) camel spider. He's also a proponent of the theory that they eat body parts off of soldiers while they sleep:rolleyes: . The best way to describe this individual would be to imagine every negative stereotype about Americans you can think of into one unholy body. And this is the guy in charge of me . . . :wall:

Isn't that always how it works? and they usually refuse to learn better, as well.

I'm surprised Brian...then again I'm from Alaska and have been on Wainwright more times than I can count, actually went to school on base for a short while while our school had asbestos removal done and had some Cub Scout camps that way too. Alaska has some very very large military bases, some of the largest in the US if you include the live fire/bombing ranges. I recall being lulled to sleep by the concussions of bombs being dropped across the river from our house in Delta Junction which is about seven miles north of Fort Greely in B.F.E. (just south of the end of the Alaskan Highway). Ah...those were good times :)
veisbeir...the guy who installed my DirectTV satellite dish was ex-military and we got to talking about camel spiders, he spouted the same things about eating soldiers' arms off while they slept and one in their Humvee that was so big they had to shoot it  I didn't feel like arguing so I just let him tell his stories lol

It does not look like sparassidae to me. It would had been great if you could have posted a picture showing the eyes of the spider. Too bad your boss kill it. Maybe you need to teach those people to apreciate the specimens and that if they are venomous, there is a reason for that.
