ok bare with me . i live in the new york city .you dont hear crickets . anyway i decided to buy crickets yesterday for my new T , and im a Noob to the hobby . so late last night i hear this chirping sound its very fate. im like wtf is that sound i get up and start looking for the sound . i hear slight movement and the chirping which sounds like it coming from the wall near my tank . i press my ear against the living room wall to see if its a mouse inside the wall making noise. . im saying to myself i know i dont have mice . i have two large maine coons so theres not way they would dare come into the apartment. i start to focus on where the sound is emitting from . and waaalaa . its the two crickets i had thrown in the tank for my T to feed one.i had forgotten that i crickets chirp at night ,lol
boy did i feel like an idiot.
i guess i have to chalk it up to, i learned something new, cricket still chirp even if there not outdoors.i just hope i can get used to the sound .lol

I live in the south and should be used to them, but I can't stand the sound and make sure to feed them to the hungriest T I have.;P

I used to do crickets and the chirping just ended up blending in with all the other background noise...I never even noticed it until someone would point it out to me again.

I use to think it was annoying too. Then I moved to Az. Deathly quite at night and I couldn't sleep. I started thinking about it and what was missing from there to Ks. I didn't have caged pets back then so I had to go buy a few crickets to help me sleep. Same thing in florida till I got a frog of some sort outside singing. I've grown to love their singing, makes me sleep now when all else fails. Lol, of all things.

Maybe it was the frog that ate them all or something. Lol. No clue, it was Pensacola around the time Ivan blasted through.

Anyway, back on-topic. ;)

My housemate had a box full (I mean 200 or so, full) of black crickets which he left on the balcony one afternoon and forgot them. One of the local birds turned up and pecked at it destroying the box.
200 crickets now populate every nook and cranny of my balcony so the chirping sound is now infecting my whole house.;P

Only males chirp so like xhexdx said feed them off first. When mature females have egg tubes comming from their abdomen and males do not. Aldo you dont need to feed 2 at once. You may also want to see where and how the crickets got out.

I find the chirping relaxing at time. Other times, not so much.

The sound of crickets chirping is actually very calming to me.
First time I had them chirp the whole night, I was in the deepest sleep!

There was a time that we were ordering 8000-10000 crickets a week. They were kept in several 18 gallon ribermaid containers.......... in our bedroom. We we moved to our new house, and the crickets were in another room, neither of us could sleep very well.
50/50 sometimes it drives me up the wall and i have to find them and feed them to my bigger T's that are always lookin for there next meal and other times i can sit there and just listen to them chirp , still end up feeding all the males first though

This is a perfect opportunity to turn your balcony into a giant Avicularia or Poecilotheria enclosure. Use heavy plastic sheeting to close off the balcony, get some big planted trees to set up out there and throw about 20 specimens out there.
I'm sure they'll take care of your cricket problem fairly quickly. ;)

HAHA. Yah. I didn't think that far into the future.
Maybe open the apartment door and let them move into the warmer area? LOL

This is without doubt the best idea I've heard. Ever. Now to convince the housemates that the balcony just went up in 'risks while tanning' (I live with 3 ladies - there's a lot of tanning involved whenever we get sun)
I'd also need to take out an overdraft to the fund the pokies. I'll call the bank. :D

Oh, well that changes things. Just make sure the ladies are aware that pokies never attack topless women so they can sunbathe as much as they want. ;)

I remember when I was a kid, I got into an argument with my mom so to annoy the heck out of her, I put a male cricket under the fridge and kept it fed. She NEVER found the cricket and it drove her crazy for weeks. X-D

Haha, we lost a cricket in my bedroom the other day when we went to feed my smithi.
The damned thing is still alive as I'll hear him periodically. {D

Honestly....I cant stand the chirping...last winter I had a cricket escape and continue to live in the walls for 6 more days!!! And another lived 4 days and ANOTHER lived 4 days...all males that chirped till they died. 14 days last winter of interrupted sleep. It drove me nuts!!!! I did everything I could think of to kill them but they were behind the drywall and under the baseboard heater..I notice that the closer they are to death..the more they chirp.
So now Im a sadistic creep and feed off the males first AND clip the wings off any large males that I toss into an enclosure just in case they dont get eaten right away.
Prior to this I loved the sound of crickets at night..now it makes my heart palpitate.

A couple of years ago my son knocked over a bin of 1000 crickets.... in my house.
The cats had fun, but night time was sleepless for a few weeks.. ugh. I switched to roaches.

I absolutely despise the sound of crickets. One time i bought a couple dozen and put them in a container to feed to my T's the next day, and all night it seemed like i was awake listening to them damn things, tossing and turning. Finally i had enough, i opened up the container and pulled each cricket out one by one and ripped their wings off.

I don't mind the chirping sound since they are in the basement and I don't hear them upstairs but, a few years ago when I had a bearded dragon in our bedroom, we would regularly lose one in the room and it would drive me nuts.
