Arachnocontest Rules And Regulations
Arachnocontests are only open to residents of the continental United States. Sorry to everyone from Canada and elsewhere, but unless you can provide an address in the US where we can ship to, we cannot accept your entries. If you reside outside of the US and do have an address that we can ship to in the US, you MUST state that in your entry post or you will automatically be disqualified. NO EXCEPTIONS. A simple "I have a US address." at the beginning of your post would be fine.
There will be different Arachnocontest types. If you win, you will no longer be eligible for that type of Arachnocontest until we start over. This is to give everyone an equal opportunity to win.
The Arachnocontest will run for the time stated in the contest thread. Make sure your entries are in before any deadlines stated.
Any further questions, feel free to contact me.

Oh, and here's the Riddle:
You need not look too close to see, It is certainly a dwarf species of Therophosidae I be.
With Markings that are sure to be a colorfull thrill, I am protected from export in my homeland of Brazil.
My slings need very small prey upon which to nourish, it seems this may be why in captivity I simply can not flourish.
My cousins all sport the same tiger-like patch, yet they all have had their captive eggsacks hatch.
I guess I'll wait for a hobbyist that cares, One who can make my price and availability much more fair.
Until then I sit in my ultra-rare state, my rusty red carapace gleaming as all stand agape.
Who am I ??????
Good Luck All

[FONT=times new roman][SIZE=3]How does one answer a riddle in the form of a poem,
with few clues to guide one to the species that calls Brazil home.
Sir Vince alludes to this spider's "tiger-like" patch,
and writes of the trouble getting its egg sac to hatch.
Alright, I'll spare you any further attempts at cleverness here,
for my poetry is saved for when children are not near.
My guess is.....................................
Cyriocosmus elegans

FOR SOME REASON I AM UNABLE TO EDIT MY PREVIOUS POST,
IS IT ME THAT IS FAULTY OR THE SERVICE OF OUR HOST? ;P
During my time wasted trying to write a satire of the riddle my guess was taken by another.
So......
I'll go with Cyclosternum melloleitaoi

Rules are a straightjacket, for those who don't need them
Whatever happened to our American freedom?
Yet I erred on my own, and accept my dismissal
For my actions reveal my ignorance blissful
Many have chosen species not found in Brazil
Now who will wow us with a riddling skill?
I watch for the answer to Vince's odd haiku
And cheer for a winner that is not he who rules =D

Hi everyone,
I have seen the answer to the riddle and I believe, unfortunatly, that it is flawed.
First, Platnick's catalog indicates that Metriopelma coloratum originates from Panama so it does not look good to start with.
I believe that the reference was probably (well, "most surely" should be the exact thing) took in the english translation of Peter Klaas's book p. 91 which caused the mistake;
The book says it originates from Brazil, but the reference is most probably to Hapalopus triseriatus that comes from Venezuela (more possible since there is a common border with Brazil and none with Panama).
The species sold in the hobby that the riddle most probably refers to is misidentified as M. coloratum and is in fact H. triseriatus.
The male specimens in the hobby have tibial spurs, which does not match the description of the Metriopelma sp. And the females of the specimens in the hobby does not have the right shape of spermatheca for a Metriopelma sp. (I have been told).
According to my sources, M. coloratum has never been in the hobby. Also the original description supposedly says that the spots on M. coloratum's opisthosoma are red, not yellow.
I hope this may help a little, sorry if it causes trouble.

As Martin pointed out, Metriopelma coloratum has only been recorded from Panama. In fact, none of the species of the genus Metriopelma are known from Brazil.
However, the confusion is the contest riddler's fault, not the winner who guessed "correctly" even if the answer is not accurate. Congrats to her! Enjoy your new spider.

Congrat's to Petite !!!!
And hopefully everyone enjoyed this months contest !
As for The controversy on the species in question , my 5 cents worth is (drum roll please ).....................
Back in the early 90's I had the pleasure of finding not one ,but two , of these delightfull dwarf spiders whom sported a distinct RED ( I repeat ) RED striping on the abdomen. These were scooped up upon sight from a fairly well know importers "bin" of Brazilian spiders of which about half were in less than great shape , and none were quite so unique ( the last and/or only two ,I suppose). One of which within a week of it's arrival molted and upon examination was male. Although lacking the tibial spurs, it's size and construction alone gave away it's sex. The second and smaller of the two remained in my care until it's day of passing roughly a year later.
At the time, the only information available was very sparse at best and it wasn't until about two years ago that I saw any mention of such a species and saw an actual photo of my dearly departed little friend ! The description was in fact in an english translation of the previously mentioned Klaas book and It did state brazil as it's Homeland. Cosidering the very vague Border between the Two Countries of Venezuela and Brazil , and the less than Noble practice's of collectors who Rarely obey or concern themselves with actual collection site records, Who is to Know or believe any locality info on such a beast as this. Therefore I was inclined to simply take Mr. klaas's information as fact.
To my Knowledge , Never has this species been offered in the hobby again in any form captive or wild caught. Regrettfully I may have seen the last of them.
Thanks for all who participated and contributed their tidbits.
Till we meet again'
Vince
