that is a nice looking T! was it labeled as something else or was this one of those rare good LPS's?

it was labeled "Mozambique Baboon". i couldn't see it the first time i noticed, but i went back a few days later to ask to see it since it was really bugging me. the second i got a good look, i knew i was right about it being an Augie so i came back again today and got her.
the place is a reptile store, so it's not exactly like i got lucky at a random LPS. even though this was still extremely lucky. it's certainly my favorite pet shop around where i live...it's also where i got my T. blondi and D. diadema.

How much was it?
Scorpendra

$100. the tank she was in was $20 extra, so i opted for the free tuppaware. it didn't seem like they have much experience with OW Ts, they were a bit nervous getting her.

Well, she's certainly beautiful. How's her temperment?
Scorpendra
09-24-2009, 11:56 AM
a little skittish, but that's to be expected since they were shaking her around to get her off the tank's sides. i haven't gotten any threat postures yet.
i was told that there's only about 25 in the states. i don't know how much i can believe it, but i know they're pretty rare.

Congrats on her, again, she's a beauty.
They were shaking her around? Poor baby. :( At least she is an appreciative and knowledgable new home now.

There are a bunch of breedings going on with this species recently. They are uncommon. But there ae way more than 25 in the states if you count slings.

yeah, i thought so. but it's still a really nice-looking spider that you don't see everywhere.
anyone know if there are any difinitive ways to tell its species? i read that breyerii has orange setae on its legs' black areas, which mine seems to have.

males are about 1 to 1.5" when mature, so i'm positive. ;) amazing sexual dimorphism, there. i don't even know how he's supposed to lift her.

very nice t. is that mold on top of her half log?
Scorpendra
09-24-2009, 08:54 PM
no, it's just some sand. the substrate in her tank is a mixture of it and coconut fiber dirt, but mostly the dirt. my M. balfouri has the same, but with more sand.

Are these arboreal or terrestrial? Looks almost like some kind of baboon.. and the carapace reminds me of some Holothele. .. but this is different. Very neat find. Never heard of augies. :D

Yup, from the same source/shipment. I agree that now there being imported they are not that rare anymore, but still hard to find.
Nice pick up Rob, hopefully one of us will get a eggsac so we have males to raise for the future. Here's a pic of mine...

An intersting thing too was that there were one or two Ceratogyrus darlingi mixed in with the shipment.

Ha! That's crazy. Gigantic horn aside, they still don't even look that alike. I guess surprises can be fun tho, eh?

haha, you never know what can happen.
the first time i saw them for sale, when i couldn't actually get a look, i figured they were either Augacephalus or Ceratogyrus. lucky thing they were what they were since the genus was on my list.
