It is my understanding that this particular budget assessent, which was made on Oct. 9, 2009, is of the ammended version o HR2811, which would have meant only restricting the importation of Burmese and African Rock Pythons. The current bill in the Senate, S373, stops just short of a complete ban on nine species in the United States, and this includes two of the most popular species in the pet trade, the Burmese Python and the Boa Constrictor(all subspecies), which form much of the "backbone" of the reptile industry. If passed, the value of all of these animals will drop to zero overnight, since most breeders depend upon interstate sales of offspring. It amounts to the HSUS policy of "One Generation and OUT"-allow the current animals living in the US to live out their lives, unable to reproduce, so that Zero Population Growth is achieved, and when these animals die off, there are no more to replace them, thus bringing about the desired result that the AR's want-extinction of captive large snakes in this country.
