I have to say (in my opinion) ... if you don't have money to invest in this endeavor ... you shouldn't be doing it.
Vet visits, proper food and supplementation, lighting, etc. all cost much more than the animal itself.
Keeping any reptile in substandard conditions and not being able to afford to improve the situation is very irresponsible.

Id suggest a leopard gecko. Easy to keep and dont need lighting as theyre noctunal in nature. Just use a heat pad on part of the cage and your good to go.

in that case, go outside and catch something local. if you don't feel the need to provide vet care for a reptile then an exotic of any kind isn't for you.

most exotic vets do reptile care as well. my local avian vet also does small mammals and reptiles. exotic reptiles can have all kinds of issues, usually because of improper care or diet, and a good vet can help with impactions, egg binding, dehydration and other semi common issues.
