Here's my little Avic metallica (or whatever , will be fun to see what it looks like when it grows up anyway, if it ever does. One verifiable molt since august? These slings eat like horses? Well, I don't have any small portable tropical jungles around, unfortunately)

Is it my imagination, or are these some of the messiest T's around?
My A metallica craps all over the tank. Her cork bark is littered with fecal matter in just a few days.
I hate cleaning the enclosure often since there's so much webbing, but she makes an absolute mess in no time.
Is this unusual???

No it's just fat. It was fat when I bought it I moulted not so long ago and was still pretty fat after the moult and has just gained a few more callories since then. It's not eating at the moment and has made a huge web so I'm expecting a moult anytime soon

Thanks for your observation. I was thinking the same thing, hence the post. And one little detail I didnt mention--they're WC, so ending up with two diff avics makes some sense. Everybodies doing fine, so thats ok w/me.

I was finally able to take some decent pictures of "Blue" a little while ago, and here is the story that goes along with it:

Blue was on the side of his enclosure and I noticed there was a half dead cricket stuck between the water dish and the bark. I took the lid off and used my forceps to get the cricket out. Of course I wasn't paying much attention to Blue, just trying to get to the cricket. Grabbed the cricket with the forceps, and started pulling it out. As soon as I was at the same level as Blue he threw himself on the cricket, hanging onto the forceps. What precision! Kinda scared the wits out of me for a second, but he was just content to climb from the forceps onto the bark, cricket in tow. :D

Gotta love this species, I certainly do.

How are there dispositions?, I've heard that they are more defensive than most other Avics. I plan on getting more Avics.
I have become friends with an owner of a local Reptile shop, who will do some ordering for me and only increase the price 20%, since he doesn't have to house them or do any feeding. So I feel a big order comming on {D If he can get these I will be ordering an A.hurrania, A.minatrix, A.metallica, A.purpera. A.juruensis, A.laeta, and poss some Psalms.

Here's Macabre again('A. metallica')..grown a lot in a little less then a year, yeah? Like lightning! Like fungus! Like a living compost-heap!

I got her (it) in August, last year (-03). Yeah, that's a super-sized maggot, a, a King maggot, and that's not a normal glass I keep her in, it's a, a, ..a 45-litre one. Yeah. Can they grow any slower? ..Hah, *remembers Mendi's humorous post in the Aphonopelma-thread*..

I have a question about aivc avic! I bought one on last Sunday , and I put it in a new tank with her transport "pack" ! She is still in the transport pack, and she only sprayed her net around! What is the meaning of that??

Sub-adult female Avicularia sp.

Your first one listed as an Avic sp.? looks very much like a purpurea to me, if not still very nice looking T.

Greg, the spider in question was in fact purchased as a sling as A. purpurea. It is very gorgeous, but looks quite different than my other female A. purpurea which is displayed below.

I've heard mention of different color phases in this species. Anyone with more input on this?

Here you go, not the best pics but... First huriana juv. is around 3" and then the bicegoi, it is looking very much like a male and if so should mature next molt is around 4-1/2"

Interesting, the bands on the legs kinda thru me but other then that looks like a purp. in need of a molt? Maybe some kind of crossing with another avic species in it past bloodlines? Greg

Last I heard (correct me if I'm wrong, as I've been out of habit of reading around), someone was researching this genus and found that most will hybridize naturally in the wild and the offspring will be fertile. Again, last I heard, the new name they were working on for 90% of the spiders in this genus was Avicularia avicularia complex.

That said, I haven't read much lately. I just tend to my collection. I clearly remember talking to Rick West about this subject, though.

I have been awaiting that one too LOL. All my avic versis have been handled against my wishes (rush out the pot to escape) even one ended up on my nose and I had to try so hard not to freak out! But none have pooped but they are only 0.75" roughly. One has learned to jump off which was scary! Our Ad fem Avic avic readily poops on my hubby when she has had enough of bein photographed heeheehee :D

Both right around 75, Just wait until they start moving around :D it is crazy as the second you open the lid you will have 50 little T's trying to escape LOL they go from not moving much to being quick little devils almost over night
So about how many do you have? Greg

I see so many post saying they can't find crickets small enough or that you chop up crickets to feed your T's, well I think that some of you may be surprised at what these little avics can take down. I have been feeding these guys oversized food since there first meals and here is one of them at about an inch easily taking down an inch and a half cricket.

Really the point was you don't have to find crickets that are smaller than the T. which can be very hard to do when they are small, just give them a shot and they just may surprise you, as for having better luck feeding 1 larger rather than 2 or more small, I can't say that I have had better luck but is funner to watch them tackle and roll around fighting with bigger pray and aslo is cheaper to feed 1 rather than 2 and easier to get larger ones.

Well, I have noticed this more with Avics but that is just because I have had more small Avics, I have also noticed this very much so with small Psalmo slings and I have never had a problem with small terrestrials eating it just seems they don't jump on it as quick as the little avics or psalmos will, but that normally goes for any size food. I think somebody asked earlier in this thread about how small avic's can be and still be shooting poop. It's not an avicularia per se, but I've seen a 3/4" I hirstura shoot poop. Thankfully the butt was not aimed at me when I witnessed that.

On a picture note, here is my Avicularia popcorn :P I think this is A. braunshaunseni or it's just Avic avic. I neglected to ask the person who was selling it at the swap, since I had assumed it was Avicularia avicularia. Anyway, she's roughly 5 years old. That is the tank she came home in, not the tank I want to keep her in, btw! I haven't moved her into a new home yet, will do this weekend, if I can find the right container.

Macabre again; out because of cage maintenance(the glass she lives in had been turned virtually opaque because of all the webbings and other stuff). It took the chance to shoot poo at my brother. She's actually grown a couple of millimetres since the last photo. Fantastic little things!

Went looking for some digital photo software (to post better T pics!) and decided to drop into the Petco next door. Saw this Avicularia sp. (simply labeled "pink toe"). Seemed in good health, but they had him in a terestrial set-up. As with most of these pet shops, they didn't know a thing about their inverts, so I don't know if this is male or female yet. However, I figured that $24 for what I am assuming to be an adult avic (maybe 5") isn't too bad.

Hello there, after seeing this adult A. versicolor at Botar by Eights table at the Tinley Park show last weekend, I decided I'd like to try keeping one.

http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/photopost/data//507/Tinley25.JPG

I got this little T today from Eight Legs Plus at the Hamburg, PA show, and I am very excited. I gave it a very small mealworm and it grabbed it right up. (pictured)

http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/photopost/data//507/Hamburg10150537.JPG

I hope it grows up to be a stunner like the one I saw at Botar's table. I will keep doing my "homework" by looking through the forums here and elswhere on the Net. I know they are very fragile and need high humidity and good ventilation.

That particular specimen is ~3.5" DLS ... still has a lot of growing to do. I've seen the mother and she's a legit 7".

GoTerps,

How big is your minatrix now that she is mature? I have two and I know they mature on the smaller side for avics, about 4 inches or so, is that right?

Hi Karen,

Well you need to keep in mind that there is a difference between maturation size and full-grown size.

She is 3" DLS right now. She was ~2.75" DLS when she laid the eggsac.

So that was Botar by 8's at the Tinley show? I was there and saw that versicolor. That guy was cool. I got my skeleton (E. murinis I believe) from him. I can't wait for more shows to come to the Chicago area! Much love for the avic's. I'm getting a versicolor as soon as I can.

Right now I'm trying to breed some A. avicularia's. I have the male with two females in a 10 gallon aquarium. Was just wondering if that would be alright to leave them together for a while. I know that this species can be kept communally, but don't know what it's like to have a mature male with two mature females, and me trying to get some spiderlings here.
