I just picked up this little guy from Krazy 8's at the IRBA in pomona this morning. Already showing some real nice red on the knees. I'd had my eye on one last october when they were at Cal Poly Pomona. Hoping to have this, a G. aureostriata and some other "kneed" t's (E. murinus and A. geniculata are on the list) in adjacent containers as adults.
Here it is in the original container:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/demicheru/tarantulas/DSCN0996.jpg
And on my hand during transfer to the new container:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/demicheru/tarantulas/DSCN0998.jpg
and
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/demicheru/tarantulas/DSCN1000.jpg
It is about three inches from leg I to V, so I think I should have a good while with it before it gets to be an adult even if it turns out to be male.

Hello Guys!!!!!!
I realize I can not post the same pics in two diferent threads, so I choose to place my pics on my own thread:

Does anyone want to give me an opinion on these two? I was sold both as B.vagans but my adult male looks more like Bark's B. sabulosum and I was wondering if the female may be the same. I mated her with a male vagans and the sac produced was a dud, could this be why or is the female a vagans?

thanks. he is my most aggressive as well. do you have any pictures of yours.
Check this out, maybe is nothing, but anyway. Today I took pictures of my both b. verdezi.
Look at the coloration on carapace:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/urosu/PICT2422.jpg
On the left is more colored black, and I think(I saw this before on juvrniles B.smithi) that more colored are females. This teory is not proven by moult yet. They are 2-3cm LS
Let me say that both are from same egg-sac, and they even moult almost at the same time. Maybe the differece in growth, between females and males, comes later?
Here more pictures:

Tegenaria: The next molt will be their 2nd instar molt (full fledged spiderlings).
Gigus: Here's a picture of the female (as of today). See the links below for pics of the male, female and mating. Essentially, this species is very closely related to B. vagans. I suspect it to be either B. epicureanum or a polymorphic variant of B. vagans.

Thanks Eman. So basically the eggs hatch into nymphs and they then molt into instars.
Thanks Eman. So basically the eggs hatch into nymphs and they then molt into instars.
Exactly - 1st and 2nd respectively. Although, I've heard that some species go through one or even several extra molts between instars, before molting out into spiderlings.

Smithis are just so beautiful, hardy, long-lived, easy-tempered (well...mine is), eye candy, and so on.

Uros,
From what I've read and learned, B. smithis mate in the fall in their native country, which is followed by cooler weather (down to 10 degrees Celsius at night but no more than 20 Celsius during the day). Once the weather begins to warm, the heavy rainfalls begin, and successfully mated smithis will then lay their eggs. :)
I'm sure people have had luck without the cooling periods, but I'm trying to simulate her natural environment, in hopes of getting a sack this time.

Cute little guy, but its albopilosum.
Tegenaria
04-16-2007, 05:09 PM
Hi paul,i know this to be the case now. I long believed that it should be albopilosa according to the rules of nomenclature. You see normally if a genus name ends in the feminine 'a' then so should the species name etc.But 'ma' is neutral, neither feminine nor masculine so albopilosum works out fine.

I was readig and reading intently the section in my book regarding sexing, and it says that the triangle formed by the forward book lungs and the pedicel forms the epigynal plate, and in the male this is slightly raised, cant see that but it also says there is a tuft of bristles inj the middle, and of a different colour to the rest of the underside, and thats what appears to be present in my pic!

The only tarantula that you should breed him with is another B. Smithi! Maybe you can search for an adult female, is always better to keep the species integrity! ;)

I agree great shot and a beautiful T. Did she just molt or has she been in that enclosure for a long time? I ask because of the insane amount of webbing for this species. Can you get a picture of the overall enclosure?
Dumaw

Hi Novak, and thanks for the compliments
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1536/thdsc02378ss7.jpg
its both, she been in this enclosure for quite some time, and she molt about 5 or 6 days ago.
I probably should do a total clean and remake the enclosure, but its not dirty I take out the rest of food and it never had fungus so I think I am going to let it be some more time
this T have been different about webbing, from the other curly I had, this one webs way more
after the molt I removed lot of web that she did all around those 2 plants, that was making a very cool closed den, thats why I didnt even put a piece of wood or something else for her to hide.
cool thing about this little creatures they each have their own personality in some kind of way right?
and sorry if my english was bad its not my first language

she (i think, will find out next moult hopefully!) arrived yesterday and is my first T!{D
She's about 13cm leg span diagonally right now, hasn't eaten yet but she's settling in rather quickly already - she has been scaling the sides and sitting on her hide, and had a couple of little trips across the substrate too, but she's on a much dryer 'strate with me then her previous owner - there was condensation in her last terrarium! :shame: But she'll soon get used to it I think!

Was wondering if you Brachypelma owners could post pics of your enclosures. I didn't see many in the enclosure thread. I will be getting a B.Smithi next week and even though it will only be a 1.5". I would like to get some kind of an idea as to what I will be looking at further down the road. Another question that I have is would a rectangular container with dimensions of 5"x4"x3" be too big for a 1.5" smithi?

Here's one of my brachys. Still having trouble with my pictures. I'll have to have my wife look at them.
This b. smithi and her sister are now gravid and I have the agonizing wait for a sac to appear!!!!

How big are your B. smithi females? She doesn't look real big from the pic but then again, I have rather small hands so all my T's look pretty big if I have them out. Pretty smithi.
