Wow... Very nice pictures Corvus. I had the chance to pick up a couple of these spiderlings late 2003, wish I had of! How do they compare to other members of the genus, in regards to size? Is that specimen 'adult female'?
Of this genus, I've only got the 'usambara murinus' and the lugardi.

I'm curious how you crazies go about handling obts. I have a 5 1/2 inch adult female from hell. She strikes at the light from my flashlight when I shine it on her. She tries to bite me no matter what kind of maintanance I'm performing inside the tank.

My photo isn't as nice as these others, but this is certainly one of my favorite genuses, now. I've wanted an Usumbara for years, but my ex always said no. She can't say that, now! ;D
Thanks go to rob, for setting me up with a couple of spiderlings. Even under 1", these guys have MASSIVE attitude. They're so mean that they're just cute!

Hi,
my P. spinifer....
its not a P. spinifer - its just a Eucratoscelus pachypus. ;P

11-10-2005, 04:20 PM
according to my buddy who's been dealing with T's for 25+ years it's definately a P. spinifer....he also said that without physically examining the subject in question, you can't distinguish the 2 based on photos....i agree....

Hi,
it's definately a P. spinifer....
btw: Pterinochilus spinifer was synonymized by R. GALLON in 2002 with the species Eucratoscelus constrictus.
E. constrictus differs from E. pachypus (the spider on your picture). E. pachypus possess stiffened russet setae on retrolateral surfaces of patella, tibia, metatarsus and tarsus. E. constrictus "only" possess incrassate Tibia.
Here an Picture of the Leg IV of E. pachypus.

Yes, situation when you don't need to use flash is the best. I should think more abuot it or start taking pictures during a day :wicked:
I always use f8 - 11, but when I synchronise flash with the "second courtain" I can use f32 and 1/500s!
PS. Thanks for the pic! ;)

Sometimes it is much worse when pics are too dark ;) I also make this mistake when use teleconverter or macro rings.

Those are all the pictures I have for now, my P. murinus is very camera shy!
Can anyone post a picture of their P. murinus terrariums, I would like to look at some examples so that I can pimp my terrarium out! What type of substrate and live plants are best? Right now I have it in a 10 Gal, with a mixture of potting soil, peat moss, and vermiculite about 5 inches high. For some reason it spends all it's time at the top of the cage, is there something wrong? Does it not like the substrate? I keep it pretty dry in there, so the ground shouldnt be to wet for it. I have only a couple plants, and lots of open space, do you think it needs more plants to feel safe? Also it's last enclosure was filled with webbing, and you could hardly see it, now my spider barely spins any webs. Does that mean anything? Sorry I have no picture of my terrarium right now, I didnt even think about taking a picture of it.
Thanks guys!
Sophia :)

Hi Ota,
only P. chordatus and P. vorax have lateraly flexed Metatarsus I.
(So, P. vorax are not (yet) in the hobby, so its possible to ID this species with the Metatarsus I - and of course of the habit of the specimen.) :)
Here you can see a P. lugardi male (not yours - as you see on the year) without this flexed Metatarsus I.

There are different color forms of P. chordatus. Actually yours looks to be between a light color form and a dark color form (maybe actually a light form). I received a male that looked almost exactly like the one in your pic. It was dark but not as dark as my dark color form female. She has none of those gold highlights.

Some of these pictures show some extensive webbing. I've had a P.Chordatus for 4 months now and she exhibits very little webbing. At the moment, she's in a burrow in the corner of her tub, tunneled right down to the plastic (so I can see her in there) with a mound of dirt pressed up covering the entrance. Is this normal or is there a chance I'm doing something wrong?
She's only eaten once in those four months, and though I know spiders can go a long time without eating (I read somewhere that most Pterinochilus can go 1-2 years without food) I do worry a little. Picture attached (though forgive the quality, it's a phone camera as my digital is out of commission at the moment). I can give more info if needed. Please PM or EMail me... =S
Is she even Chordatus? I can never tell the difference between them; she was sold as Murinus but I'm pretty certain she's not. She has the little triangle 'dags' down her abdomen rather than those two little dots (I have a Murinus as well, but she's camera-shy).
