Megapets in plainview, Long Island has an outstanding selection of arachnids. As far as Tarantulas go, they have species ranging from your common rose hair all the way up the ladder to P. subfusca and P. metallica. At last count they carried at least 44 different species of tarantula, and they seem to get in new stuff every week. The guy Tom who works in the reptile/arachnid section has excellent knowledge of all the animals in his store, and takes great care of everything. He also can get you just about anything you want. I must also mention that their prices compete with the prices you find at expos and online. They sell a variety of quality captive bred reptiles...and not the usual stuff you see in pet stores, and the in-store displays are beautiful! Also, if you are into fish, this store has a selection unlike any other I have seen on the island-great stuff, though I have to mention that I personally dont collect fish, but they make it very tempting.
I have bought many animals and supplies from them and have never been dissappointed. T collectors - this is the store on the island for all your spider needs - hands down!
If you live on the island, or the city, or just happen to be in the area, definately stop by - you wont be dissappointed!

i recently went there, and i must agree with you 100%. as someone looking for a first tarantula, this shop is perfect. in fact, i even saw the molted skins of all their Ts, definitely not something every long island shop retains. also, i'm not sure if i counted 44 species', but there was definitely a very large and impressive selection of Ts, especially pokies, 44 or not. the fish section was also very interesting. even though i knew that there was a unique variety, i was not expecting a lungfish, nor mudskippers. albeit there being a lack of starters, i must say that it exceeded all my standards, and i give megapets two thumbs up. i'll definitely have to do buisness in the future, once i can arrange going to plainview on one of the days that Tom is working.
best store i've ever been to

Actually "bumped" into it today as I went to see a car in Plainview. A nice treat to see such a collection of T's in a pet store. First time I saw an P murinus up close. Lots of pokies and a lovely female G pulchra. They did have 2 avics...a juvie minatrix, and a wild caught urticans. Thumbs up in this one, I will go back!! Oh well, came home with some cork bark.
Thanks Philth!!
By far it's the best pet store I've ever been to. It had hundreds of Tarantula's better then even online venders I've seen in both appeal and size.
I couldn't help myself. I bought what is virtually half of my collection was supposed to become in months time. Tom, the person who handles the inverts/reps was phenominal. Great guy, tons of knowledge, just can't say enough. He knows his <edit>! He also threw in a few freebies which prompted me to buy!
Here's what I got today.
M. Robustum (adult, female)
A. Minatrix (adult, female)
P. Regalis (adult, female)
P. Rufilata (juv, unsexed)
A. Geniculata (juv, unsexed) Premolt!
A. Versicolor (sling)
N. Coloratovillosus (sling)
B. Vagans (sling)
B. Vagans (sling)
P. Cancerides (sling)
I highly recommend buying from them and will in fact return to buy more larger species. They are the real deal when it comes to this hobby!
Just thought I'd add some more plugging
Went there today. Got my male Regalis and a very cool Smithi. Once again extremely satisfied! Tom as usual was tremendous in answering all my seemingly redundant questions. Even though I pretty much expected most the stuff there from my last visit I am still amazed by the selection. I am comfortable with my collection now, which I might add is mostly comprised of stuff I have boughten from Megapets. I suggest anyone that can make the trip and hasn't yet does as you will not be disappointed nor will you leave empty handed. :D

MegaPets is a large, brightly lit, well stocked pet store that does not smell! Plus they have a large and varied selection of Ts! At GREAT prices! AND someone that knows what he's talking about! HEY PHILTH!:worship: AND you can see the infamous P. metallica :} just don't touch :shame: . I'm VERY happy with my new B. emilia and curly hair (I can't spell that one), they are very healthy critters. The store also has lots of other really fine critters, a beautiful marine and tropical fish department, adorable rodents, clean well kept beardies, and so on and so forth so if you are near LI, it's worth the trip. Easy to find too!

First of all let me thank my best friend Manny (MRL) for bugging so much, asking to come all the way from PA to see Megapets. What I saw is truly incredible. Tom who is the caretaker of the invertabrate and reptile section is very well informed and posseses great knowledge on tarantulas and scorpions. Tom maintains a variety of tarantulas to satisfy anyones taste, they are all well cared for and for some reason they get very big, very quickly at megapets. All of Toms specimens are beautifull and exhibit very nice colors. In addition the prices at megapets are truly one of a kind. its not kosher to disclose prices but all I have to say is THANK YOU TOM. Ohh I forgot to mention here one can see the famous Poecilotheria Metallica. Tom keeps several female adults from his own collection at megapets, if you ask kindly he may show them to you and believe me if you have never seen the P.met this is a wondefull chance to see one, very nice. Last of all megapets is located exit 42 off the lie make a right a the corner and go down (south) until you see the large shopping center on your left. pull in and your there.
Thank you: Tom for all your help and insight
As posted above, I dragged my friend down there and we were more than pleased. Quality, everything, just top notch. As usual Tom was great to talk to and deal with. It is really an enjoyable trip everytime. This past weekend I actually took a look at the other animals they had and have to say there is an impressive selection of everything. I don't know much about anything else but everything is obviously well taken care off, clean and maybe it's just that I am not used to seeing things they have there but so much is not common to me. Back to T's, really it's worth the trip even if you don't buy anything (you will ;) ). I look forward to going sometime soon. Thanks again Tom!
Here's a quick shot I took with my phone of one of the Pmets in view, I think everyone would enjoy this. :D

Yes, I must give credit where the credit's due. I should've posted this months ago, just kept forgetting! :8o :o
Definitely one of the best pet stores I've ever been to. I'll look for any excuse to go here (luckily my rabbit eats lots of hay!) The T and reptile section is supreme. All of my T's have come from here so far. After I'm done staring at the T's (takes an hour or so ;) ) I have to say hi to the beardies and Arnie the tortoise. If you're lucky, you'll see the elusive basilisk. The only time I've seen it is when it jumped out of the foliage in its tank and made me go  It's a really pretty lizard
As others have mentioned, the fish section is very nice and worth strolling through. Also stop and say hello to the birds, they like attention
Of course, Tom is great. He's my arachno-guru :worship:
Thanks to the previous reviewers for making Megapets known. Never would've found it otherwise!

Unfortunately one of the popular stores on Long Island, NY is now, most likely, going out of business. The person who worked there with all the arachnids, Tom Patterson, left so now they have nothing. Don't bother going there, you'll just be wasting the drive. It's very upsetting but there's nothing we can do. This sucks. :wall:
Peace,
Jackie
