Went to Jolly Jim's at Sunland Mall today. I asked to see the tarantulas and the girl vaguely pointed to the right. I went over and there were probably 8 Tarantulas, each in a tiny critter keeper. All of the spiders, except for a pinktoe, looked full grown.

None of the spiders was labelled and none of them had any water in their "cells". Instead each had a piece of sponge which I assume had been wetted. The spiders were in very tiny Critter Keepers, with dimensions of roughly 6" L X 4" H X 4"W (rough estimate). 3 of the spiders had their legs curled close to their bodies, one of them was standing against the glass not moving at all (dead?). One spider was almost hairless and was tan (have no idea of the species). All but two of the spiders looked like G Rosea. Out of the spiders, I only saw one which looked healthy. I studied the front legs of all the spiders I could and they all looked like females. Most of the keepers has 2 or more crickets in them, with the spiders virtually standing over them.

I was pretty depressed after going to Jolly Jim's. I was torn between saving one of the tarantulas, or saving my money for a healthy spider later on. Sadly I didn't purchase any of the spiders, I felt that it would be wrong to encourage Jolly Jims to keep selling tarantulas, which is what I would be doing by purchasing one. Plus, I doubt as a new keeper that my skills would be developed enough to save one. But I still felt bad in not saving one of the little gals.

Sadly, that's the only store option I have available with gas prices being so high. There's no decent pet store in El Paso. I always just ask them when they're expecting a new shipment, and I show up on the morning of arrival to see if they have anything interesting. It really is quite horrible.
