You can expect Aphonopelma's to grow about as fast as glaciers move... extremely slow. I have some slings that were maybe 1/6" when I got them a little over a year ago that haven't even made it to 1/2" yet... But think of it this way, you'll get to enjoy even the males around 10 years before they mature :D

I have about 12 Aphonopelma's and 10 are burrowed in.
A.schmidti. 5.5" W/C
A. behlei
Fresh out of its burrow.
About 4" W/C
Aphonopelma sp. San Pedro
4" W/C
Aphonopelma sp. Mex. Bisbee
This is the meanest Aphono. I've ever seen. Its in attack mode at all times. I would never try to hold this T.
It goes crazy like a H. lividum.

I just found a loead of pics of Lasiodorides striatus and they look nothing like my T. But I did find some pics on peoples sites of that were labled as A seemanni that were brownish like mine.

I know that you cannot positively ID a spider from a picture, but having the usual imports in mind and the general "looks and feels" of L. striatus and A. seemanni in mind I would say that your T is most likely to be L. striatus. Compare with this picture from Rick West's site:
http://www.birdspiders.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=photo.detail&imageid=15B00941KD0B7KAEC2K14E9BC04FCA49172
At least I can say this much. All A. seemanni has orange/tannish spinnerets and are orange/tannish ventrally. Do your spider possess that kind of ventral coloration?
Best regards

I can say this is not an A. seemanni. Most likely a L. striatus
In my opinion a very nice spider that grow very very large and easily outgrow an A. seemanni ;-)

Anyone got any they need to sell me??
The first girl is a fantastic chocolate color right after she molts. This is her latest picture long after her last molt. She still looks great to me! I'll be sure to snap more pictures after a fresh molt.
The second tarantula is a problematic species. It is supposedly known as Aphonopelma 'eutylenum' type. It is a problematic species that needs further study from what I have gathered on it. The tarantula pictured was photographed and left in the wild.
The third one is a tarantula that I collected near Alamogordo, New Mexico. I don't know what it is. Anyone? Is it perhaps Aphonopelma anax?

Christy W. {D
It is an Aphonopelma semanni Common name Costa rican zebra. it is very docile, but very skittish and has kicked it's hairs at me once. It usually runs to its burrow when i get too close to the tank. This one is not for sale sorry. you will most likely see one like this in a pet shop but that one will be very brown in color -USUALLY- when these spiders molt they can be quite different colors brown, black and sometimes blue. from what i have seen the blue seems to be a bit rare. the female of this species can live a long time, depending on care and living conditions. The male of this species most likely wont live long after maturity. To awnsert your question of this spider being gentle....It's not a puppy and it CAN bite you, but so can ANY spider. these spiders are commonly mislabeled in pet shops as "stripe knee" and sell for about 20$. To be sure you have an Aphonop[elma semanni look for orange/ tan colored spinnerettes on the butt.

Geez, reviving this caused me to post a few more if my Aphono's
1. A.texense F Marge wanted me to show off her new molt...
2. one more... She had somehow managed to rub off enough of her hairs the 30some hours between casting the exuvia and pictures to have a little bald spot. I think she started playing dozer...
3. My sweet little female A.moderatum Kerry finally lost all her sling brown :D
4. Macro study of Teal, a female A.sp."Tnerb" aka "Carlsbad Green"
5. Closest to A.moderatum T.porn yet. Sassy must like this male, they've been living together since June  Yet she'll bite me for upening the enclosure.
Maybe her being WC gave her that attitude, but Kerry is a Swifty CB baby, and never has thought to even threaten me... Course, that might not have anything to do with the personalities either, but we'll never know :o

Leon, what are you feeding her to get that much color? She is gorgeous  :worship:
I promice not to give away the secret :worship:
But anyways, I thought I would get pictures of my 3 & 4 year old Aphono slings... They grow so very terribly slow... I've got some just reaching ½'' LS and I've had them, well, since I got the addiction, some 3 years ago. I'm doubting they will mature before I'm 60
1. This little A.behlei I've had 3 years now, and she's healthy and all, but hasn't any growth hormones "Someday Grow" is her name
2. Her she reminds me of a 3-4 month old B.albo... She appears to have a good bit of black hairs though, I don't consider any of them slings anymorem as they are all at least 2 and some goingo on 4
3 & 4... A.sp."Roswell", can they grow any slower? I think "Roswell" is a better fitting name "New Mexican Blonds". I'm sure something igot left in the soil there, maybe even turning them into a dwarf species :p
5. A.sp. "Carlsbad Green" grow only nano increments faster
But, even though they are soooo slow I just love 'em. And if I get really tired of waiting on them to grow, I will get a grown one. :o

Oh no, that wasn't the end of the little miniT post. I've got gobs of Aphono's
1. This one is A.so."Flagstaff Orange" She is growing faster than the last 2 mentioned :)
2 & 3 Now this species really does grow by leaps and bounds when compared to these others. Meet Chloe the A.sp."Megastriatus"
4. Calfornia Dreaming, my A.eutylenum is growing a hair faster... Course you won't notice it for a few years
5. A.clarki... New to the Aphono collection but is already leading me to believe it is one of them
One thing though, I have really getting practice with patience with these special "brown" Aphono's :o :D

Here's one you don't see very often. I bought her along with a mature male back in May of 1999. The male was mature and could fit on a silver dollar. I gave him to Tom Prentice. She is fully mature and under 2 inches. Both were collected near Portal, AZ. She just molted. John

I picked up some macro lenses filters for my digital camera the other day, have been playing around with them, havent gotten it all figured out yet. I took these, the enclosure was on a dark shelf so the lighting wasnt the best, so it required a flash. The depth of field was reduced on some, as it would focus on one leg and others would be slightly out of focus but i'll nail it soon :P
the photos were 1856x1392, photobucket reduced them greatly but you can see what he looks like pretty good

This girl had not molted for 2 years until this past weekend... she hadn't eaten for ~10 months! Good ole Aphonopelma for ya! Her colors are nice and bright after the molt... HERE (http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showpost.php?p=379885&postcount=59) she is in January with more subdued colors.

That name would be A.burica i think, it's probally A.seemani but burica is almost identical (only a much shorter leg III to carapace then A.seemani is all i know).

Here's one you don't see very often. I bought her along with a mature male back in May of 1999. The male was mature and could fit on a silver dollar. I gave him to Tom Prentice. She is fully mature and under 2 inches. Both were collected near Portal, AZ. She just molted. John
What species is it?

I just picked up this Aphonopelma seemani a few days ago.
Shes been acting weird though, at the pet store she was dropped pretty good in her little keeper.
So hopefully shes alright, but they said i could bring her back.
But she hasnt started burrowing&she hasnt eaten yet.

I would recommend getting rid of the water gel and replacing it with clean fresh water. The water gel is not recommended for tarantulas.
It might take her some time to get settled into her new enclosure.

This is a 4" spider I raised from a sling born in captivity August 2003 from a wild collected egg sac found in the hills NW of Canon City, Colorado. So we're looking at a sac that was found at around 7000 ft + in altitude.
This was supposedly something called an A.coloradanum which I suspect is nothing but a colorful A.hentzi whose cephalothorax is a bit more shiny gold than 'normal' for a A.hentzi. Does anyone else in the Denver area still have any of the slings from that spider party long ago? This is one of three I have left. They were very easy to raise, are extremely low maintenance and, as you can see, quite colorful.

Actually, A. seemani IS one of the species most-recommended as "beginners' tarantulas". They are very rugged and durable as T's go, and are easy to obtain, at least in the US, where I often find adults(including my own blue-phased female)for sale for as little as $5.00. I would not consider them to be a "handleable" species, generally speaking, though. All that I've ever seen have been nervous and skittish and all-too-quick to throw a theat display.

Here's a couple of fresh pics of a really small mature female Aphonopelma "somethingorother" that I've had for 5-6 years now. She was found as a "still-colorless"(according to her previous owner)'sling underneath some bricks in his backyard near Las Crucas, New Mexico, not far from the borders with TX and Mexico. He had her for 8 years before becoming bored with her and disappointed that she wasn't becoming this huge spider that he'd hoped for. His mother and I are good friends, and when she told him I had tarantulas, he sent this one to me. She is mostly black, which does fade to a duller brownish-black after awhile, but she moulted a couple of days ago, so I took these pics of her recently-moulted. I put a standard-sized prescription pill bottle cap in with her in one pic for scale, to show how small she is. This is the first time, though, that she's shown reddish setae underneath her legs following a moult. She is very docile and has never even kicked hairs at me.

No, it's on a potting soil mixture from Wal-Mart.
I wish I COULD say that I have these things on my doorstep, but that's not the case. I live in South Carolina, on the east coast of the US, a LOOONG way from any native T populations. The nearest native populations are half a continent away, and it's a big continent! There are still some colonies of introduced B. vagans in Florida, but it's not like I will have the opportunity to go down there and look for any. I really don't have any more opportunities to find T's than you do, so I have to either buy 'em, or luck up once in awhile and have someone give me one that they've gotten tired of, like this one. Most of my freebies are G. roseas, though, that the owners have gotten scared of.

Hi Mikhail!
It's been a while... I thought the exact same thing when I saw this picture. Peter did not respond to my PM.
Coincidentally, the Brachypelma sp. Yucatan I have, were initially sold under the very same name: Aphonopelma sp. Yucatan. So much for Ray's nonsense about them not being available anywhere else (other than in our collections) and/or being hybrids... Ha ha!
Anyhow, to be continued via email.
Cheers,

I think it may be a female but i'm a little unsure ... insofar as sexing goes i only know what i've read ... when i first put it into the tank it made a bee-line for the open lid and climbed up the side which let me get a little look underneath ... seen what looks like a flap !
hopefully it's a "she" - i've heard females live a lot longer !
justnow it's a bit quiet - hiding away in the burrow... i'm hoping that it'll liven up tonight !
i'll keep ya posted !!

i have never worked with moderatum, but i have had good success with other aphonopelma. some unidentified species as well as a few dwarf species. i have a paloma sitting on a sac right now. good luck with the moderatum. they really need to be bred so the wild populations dont get hit so hard anymore.
