Spydra, (Renee), sent her male to me for this. He is unfortuantely no longer with us...but not before two successful insertions were made.
The intro between these two didn't go well at first, in fact on three seperate occasions, he turned tail and ran when she touched him...she was VERY willing.
However, this nite went fine. The first series are them finding each other.

In this next series, you can see him postioning his tibial spurs to lock her fangs and drumming her underside. Two insertions were made, and I actually saw her twitch backwards when he made the insertion.

This first pic shows him about to move away...the last one of his demise.
I messed up for one...thinking she would be the slow moving, virtual pet rock that she ALWAYS is with me after they broke apart and because of the way she would just turn around and go back in her burrow after the introductions where he turned tail and ran on her.
I observed them part and he turned and moved away and she simply sat there. I looked away to set the camera down to pick him up and she blew up and and chased him down from behind. I tried in vain to seperate them...the last pic merely documents it. (Renee ok'd it ;) )
So Renee, I am hopeful...these are prolific breeders...hope we get a sac kiddo!

You take such great pics wayne! How long does it normally take before you will know if she is gravid?

Well I know her eating habits, for one. She has always been a one cricket a week lady...you put anymore in there and she'll ignore them. So I will be watching that as well as her behaviors in her burrow and watch the abdomen growth as well. I should start to notice the behavior change in the next couple of weeks. After consuming the male, she was offered a cricket last nite and she pounced on it...so...so far so good! The insetions he made were very good ones and his bulbs were loaded! You can actually see one in the pics.
Thanks Renee! Fingers crossed here!

My Roxanne did the same thing to Adam's male, but before he got to mate  I did get them seperated, him in an ICU, but she got him in a vital area and didn't make it. I couldn't let her eat him when she hadn't let him have his way with her... Her killer instincts were activated faster than I've seen   :( Poor little guy :( I was really wanted her to have the 800+some slings her rear looks like her sac would've had
She was a very, very bad Brachy B***** the other night... . . . I've got a couple guys maturing soon, and one of them will have her before she has him, her birth control method won't work

Thanks for sharing this Mendi...because Martha is one of those tarantulas you just have to pick up to get any movement from. SHe'll let you stroke her and pet her...she's so lazy, I drop crickets in front of her, and she's spoiled to this treatment. I messed up because I thought her reactions were going to be the same...and to see her chase the male down from behind and pounce onhim the way she did totally surprised me. And one of her fangs was buried in his carapace, otherwise I was going to do the same thing with the ICU. So at least he got the insertions he did...and whether that triggered some killer instinct in her I don't know...but I've had her almost 5 years now and she has NEVER moved that fast before.
Good luck with your next males. :D

Wayne, let me put it this way... my B albo ate the male the 3rd mating each time. They are LIGHTENING fast when they want to be, and nothing each time indicated to me that it was anything other than a routine mating. the first time I got over 600 slings, and the second time (are you ready??!) over ONE THOUSAND!
So, by all indications...you'll be a proud (and frightened!) grandpa soon!

Better start breedin' some crickets! {D
Wayne - how's this "project" going? If you were successful, then I have been promised some of them from Spydra. She most graciously gave me my first sling on Saturday to help me start my collection, and I'm waiting not so patiently for more T's. I hope all goes well! Great pics, BTW!

Hey thanks KJE! So far, she is eating very heavy and that's about it. I'm encouraged because she is NOT a big eater...in fact a couple of years ago, she went on a fast that lasted almost a year.
But I will keep everyone up to date on her progress...thanks for asking!

Maybe all those slings carried him away and ate him  haha.
On a more serious note, about how ling does it take for this species to lay the sack after the breeding? I'd think you would have heard something by now.
Good LUck with that.

What do you guys do with all the slings? Cannibalism down to a reasonable amount? I can't imagening a 1000 albo-wannabie-owners sitting outside your door waiting for the birth any day soon, haha.

I highly doubt it was successful. I mainly need to get ahold of him for a project that I would like him to work on for me. He does WONDERFUL drawings and had done one for me a couple years ago. It looks like he has not posted in quite a while and I have emailed him, but have not heard a word...I hope everything is okay with him, I worry very easily haha!
