So I was walking over to my place from my parents house and noticed this big web under the eve towards the front, between two shingles. It's hard to tell exactly how big a circle it makes since it's so high off the ground, but the hole in the middle appears to be about the size of a quarter, give or take some. It's in a spot to catch afternoon sun, and it's fairly sheltered by the eave of the house. The house itself is rather "spidery" IMHO, due to the shingles and bricks, which give alot of shelter. I've seen this kind of web before, usually constructed around a hole in brickwork on the same side of the house, towards the other end. This is also new, I think, as i've not noticed it before now.
From experience the spiders that live inside these funnel-ish constructions are pretty big suckers, as western NC spiders go, and fair teleporters in terms of speed. No idea what genus/species though. Any ideas?

Wait until it gets dark and take another picture, the spider will most likely be out at that time.

It looks as though the web is made of cribellate silk. Amaurobius sp. are known to build their webs, which look like those in the pictures, on brick walls.
It could also be a filistatid. Kukulcania get pretty large and should be common in your area.

It's entirely possible the spider has been indoors until now. As old as this house is there's plenty of ways for spiders to get in; I frequently share my room with wolf spiders and other smaller kinds while its cold. Plus it's been unseasonably hot lately. was up in the 60s today.

what do ya know? ;) j/k
i remember about 6 years ago i went to a friend's house and since it was storming outside and we wanted to go smoke a nice fatty...we went out to the shed where the laundry machines were. It was dark and I walked right on in...then he turned on the light and there were webs like that ALL over the shed, some of them you could even see the spiders sittin at the entrances and a few even wandering around. Can't say I enjoyed being surrounded by so many of those decent sized spiders lol, especially not knowing they were there before I walked in! I refused to sit down, just stood in the middle of the floor :p

I know all  Even after we got into the high teens on christmas night, I've seen many jumping spiders and even a few funnel webs here and there.

Lucretia is right! The web is made of an Amaurobius. If the spider hasnīt abandoned its web you can see the spider if you go out during the night with a torch. Then it will demonstrate its method how to spin cribellate silk.

Clearly spiderman missed his aim when he tried to capture some thief on the roof...
