Just got my millipedes from Orin of Mantids Assassins. Alive and well, in great shape, and right on time. He also included an extra Narceus americanus and two freebie mantids -- quite a pleasant surprise!
Overall a very positive experience. No problems at all.
NEGATIVE
His name is Orin McMonigle, and he's from Brunswick, OH. I was in contact for this breeder for about a month before the Tanzanian Whip was ready to be shipped. When it was finally ready to go, I was told shipping would be $20 for express (which, like most people, would have assumed meant overnight, not the unsafe 2-day method through the US Post Office that no experienced breeder would ship through), though when the package was finally received, only $13 was spent on shipping. He explained the difference as a "box charge." Believe me, if I knew small boxes were $7, I would have supplied my own.
He shipped the package out on a Saturday, which meant no chance of delivery on a Sunday, so Monday was the only option. But since this package was US Post Office Express, the mail carrier did not leave the package at the door. In fact, he didn't even come to the door. They merely left a note saying I could get my package tomorrow. There were 2 people at home even though I was not, and neither of them heard so much as a knock or doorbell. That meant I had no control over getting the package on Monday. I work second shift, so I wrote a message to the dealer explaining the problem late at night. He later whined about how I told him the situation too late, and that this was out of his hands.
When I finally picked up the package on Tuesday, here is the note I sent him:
Hello,
Well, I have some bad news. I picked up the package today, but the little guy didn't make it. He's all in one piece with no broken limbs, but unfortunately something else must have killed him. The mantis seems to be doing just fine, and thank you very much for including him. I've always wanted a mantis.
I'm not sure how you want to go about replacing him. If at all possible, is there a way you can ship him out overnight through DHL? I don't want the Post Office to hold the package overnight again.
Let me know what your procedure is.
Thank you for your trouble,
Nick
And his response to this message:
Hi Nick,
Most dealers won't guarantee two day, but I do. However, noone on the planet would guarantee live arrival if you don't get the box when delivered. Find an arachnoboard dealer who would guarantee if you don't get the box and we can discuss it. The best I could offer would be a 50% discount on a future amblypigid purchase. Normally I would require proof of death but it's a moot point on something picked up a day late.
So basically I am now stuck with a dead bug. (And shouldn't dealers like this start proving that these guys were alive when sent out if they complain about no proof of death so much? What about the buyers who have no proof of life?)
If you want to deal with guy go ahead, but don't expect friendly customer service, or any sort of refund for when they use a known bad shipper for live insects, and use the saved money for their own pockets. This guy doesn't care about his bugs if 2-day shipping is his main method of shipping. A very high risk in my opinion. He gives a bad name to excellent dealers I have ordered from in the past. I just recieved 12 Zebra Hissers from Orin in trade a few days ago. All arrived alive (with an extra 2 in the box) and much larger than I expected. I was very happy with my transaction and will do much more business with him in the future.
Bort: I'm very sorry you had a bad experience... Over the past few months, I too have recieved a few dead spiders and only a few people have made good and replaced them. I have my boxes sent to my work address so I'll for sure get them. You know how horrible the post office is from time to time. If I expect a home delivery, I POST A SIGNED NOTE ON MY FRONT DOOR asking the postman/woman to please leave the package on the porch. They take the note and the signature is like a delivery signature confirmation for them...
again, I'm sorry it happened to you, tailless whips are bad a*s...

I just received my order from Orin. All the critters arrived in great shape, and I was delighted to receive a few surprise freebies too. I felt pretty comfortable throughout the whole transaction because Orin's good with communication and answering questions (i.e., no terse one-liner responses). I will definitely be placing more orders from him in the future.
