I found a neat looking beetle the other day while we were getting some pine trees removed. I identified it as a Monochamus carolinensis Anyone know anything about these little guys? I figure I'm just going to watch it for a few days then let it go. (BTW, the picture isnt of the one i found but looks exactly the same)

Longicorn Beetles

Hi misfitsfiend,

It looks very similar to our (Australian) longicorn beetles, some of which have become exotic pests over there I believe, affecting eucalypt plantations. They have huge grubs that cause quite a bit of damage to trees, boring well into the wood.

Those are an example of the beetles and borers from here (not necessarily of the same species however), and here is a page on them from South Australian forestry.
