I voted A. avic, but actually started with two slings. The other was A. versicolor. Unfortuately, due to a visual obstruction I knocked over the versi's jar just after it's 3rd molt with me. :8o  :( So I just had the A. avic for another year, and then started getting more slings. After refusing to buy the everyday rosehaired as my first T, I am now wanting one. Everyone talks about how unpredictable and quirky they are, and that really has my curiousity peaked.

My first was a G.Rosea for $12.99 at a local petstore. After a month or so I gave it away to a good home. That is one boring species if I wouldn't have gave the hobby another chance by buying a Stripe Knee & An Usambara and just went off my experience with G.Rosea I probably would be in the hobby today. Most will disagree but IMO this has to be the most boring T out there.

My first T was a 1" s'ling given to me by a friend who had bred her male and got some hatchlings. It was a g.pulchra and I have been hooked on them ever since. I had him 2 years...he only lived 6 months after his adult molt. I swore I'd never get another male.
I had one 'gulchie' for 8 years and she was the sweetest, most beautiful spider that ever lived. She died during a molt because I did not have a peep hole into her hide. I cried for days... it was my fault.
Then I took a s'ling from a friend...it was a male. But he lived two years after maturity...another heartbreaker.
Last Dec I ordered a 2" g.pulchra from Botar which turned out to be female and the most fun T a person could want....and talk about gorgeous! She is now 4 1/2 " of black velvet, long legged perfection :) I am still trying to get my sister to take pics so I can show her off on the forum.
I have never had any other species of T

My first was a real beauty. It was sold to be as a Peruvian Velvet Green. They did not list a scientific name. Upon some research, I found out it was a Cyclosternum sp?, which was known as a Cobalt Redrump. These have now been reclassified as Thrixopelma cyaneum. Unfortnately, mine turned out to be a male. He had his ultimate molt about 7 months after I got him. I did send him out in an attempt to breed, but it was not successful.
Unfortunately, this was a highly underrated tarantula in the hobby and they never really became established.
Here is a picture of him: http://www.kanidey.com/images/tarantula3.jpg

I started with two tarantulas. I bought them together and they were both spiderlings. One was a Poecilotheria fasciata and the other was a Brachypelma smithi. Both turned out to be females but the fasciata died molting two years later. I still have the redknee.

Female P. murinus. I fell in love with the orange and a friend of mine sold her to me for $20.00 because he raised them from little slings. My daughters named her pumpkin (I only had 2 daughters then). I remeber the first night I had her and I shined a flash light into her sweater box, she did not like that at all displayed rushing threat posture striking the side of the box. :worship:

Mine was a G. Rosea - and I have absolutely zero, zilch, nill, nada, keine regrets at all.
Wait, perhaps I have to modify that response a bit. I do regret not doing enough research before purchasing Socrates, as with the proper knowlegde I may have been able to resist purchasing a near adult, WC male Rosea, who nonetheless was an awesome experience, and who totally got me hooked on Ts in no time at all. :)

My first was a mature female G.rosea... Mary Jane (you know, like spiderman's gf...) who was the sweetest thing. my gf held her and everything. then one day my room mate did *something* to her and she got her new name "Scary Mary Jane" then after she charged me and got a few legs wrapped around my hand as i was pulling it out of her cage she got her full name "Scary [expletive-deleted] Mary Jane"
she's slowly becoming nice again :)
i'm glad my wretched terrible ex-room mate is supposedly in jail now!
i bought her with 7 legs, cuz i knew spiders could regrow and thought it would be cool to see something as big as a tara regen... little did i know how er, often some roseas molt :wall:

Ive got the dumbest response of all! I was looking for a tarantula, didnt know that there were different kinds. I saw a rosehair and a mexican redknee(also marked as a rosehair) at a Superpets. I asked for some info on them, and the employees there new nothing, finally a manager walked up to me with a xeroxed care sheet, which had the Grammastola rosea referred to as its previous genus and species name (I forget what that was). Well, of the two $14.99 spiders, I chose the rosehair... It was big, pretty, and docile, on the other hand the mexican redknee must of been near a molt cause it didnt look too impressive. I kicked myself every day since then, for about a year. Now I dont regret it, because I have many fond memories with my first giant rosehair, Luna. Shes been all over the country with me; Shes been an aid in many college speeches/demonstrations Ive given, on everything from therapuetic pets, to spiders, to phobias, I even worked her in on a speech I gave about testing on animals in the cosmetic industry. On a different note, last year she was part of my Halloween costume at our work party, and spent the day on my desk with me.
A lot of times people ask me, how much is Luna worth to you; How much would it cost to buy her from you. I always answer that shes basically... Priceless! I know I wouldnt sell her for a thousand bucks (but maybe 2 ;) )

After 100 votes in the poll the dominance of G rosea as a first T is no surprise. This was and continues to be an important introductory T to the hobby. Its availability and cost are the biggest factors its a first purchase. However it is a good ambassador for the hobby despite the "boring" label. Its easy to keep alive, low maintenance, full bodied, long lived, easily seen in a display and yes even has pretty color.
The fact that it doesn't feed consistently, and is not very active, does not discourage people from the hobby like a higher maintenance, more difficult to keep alive species. In general, if you had success with a rosie, you are turned on, rather than turned off to the hobby.
I am a little surprised that avicularia and smithi weren't higher percentage first T species. And I am a little surprised at the sophistication of some of the first time owners...which indicates the arachnopet hobby is getting better information to the public. No doubt though websites like this.
The standard answers about "Which T should I purchase first?" by referring to a sticky might be too simplistic for this hobby. If we allow an open dialog, newbies might understand options better, talking with people willing to help. Threads get closed too fast to answer what is perhaps the most important question for the advancement of this hobby. What about an entire category devoted to this topic?
I fail to see what harm leaving this kind of thread up creates. Anyone tired of those kind of questions can choose to not respond. JMO.

B. Smithi is far more expensive in the pet trade these days than G. rosea.

I agree, smithi is usually much more expensive. However, you CAN bargain hunt in this hobby pretty easily.
I bought a two inch smithi for $19.95 at a local pet shop a few month ago. I bought a 1.25" Costa Rican Tiger rump for $20 at a reptile show in April. Last October I bought a one inch flameknee for $10 at a show.
But I agree with you TOTALLY, G. rosie is the cheapest and most available. About a year ago at a reptile show I saw 100s of rosies in deli cups for sale at $3 each. I almost bought one that looked like it was 6" and FAT, but they were wild caught and I did not want to support their exploitation.
They must have been purchased for around 25 cents each by dealers to be sold at $3. If you do the math, 100 x .25= $25, so they would need to sell 9 out of 100 to turn a profit ($27). I have to be the cheapest girl in the world when it comes to buying Ts at discounts (I usually never pay retail), but I WOULD be willing to spend more on captive bred rosie slings, than have them mass collected and have 90% die in deli cups.

I am a little surprised at the sophistication of some of the first time owners.
Well, just weighing on this for myself, as a relatively new T owner... For me the sophistication is a byproduct of being deeply into reptiles. I keep 16 snakes and a gargoyle gecko, so I'm accustomed to thoroughly researching a purchase and potentially providing for an animal with demanding needs.
It actually was my intention to start off with a B. smithi. However, I was unable to resist a G. rosea sling in a local pet store for the modest price of $3.99. :D
That said, there should hopefully be a B. smithi coming to live at my house sometime next week.

Little Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens that matured into a male. First T I ever owned, first T I ever shipped out for a breeding loan. I remember that day. Early spring in 1979. I ventured up to the mall on my bike that crisp cool Saturday morning. For some reason I went into the pet store and saw a small crowd of people gathering around a glass tank on a table. Pushing my way through I was stunned to see a Brachypelma Smithi. Adult female that had recently shed. I stood there for a good twenty minutes just looking at her. It was then I crossed the threshold.
I pulled out my crumpled twenty dollar bill and bought her. People thought I was crazy and were telling me one bite from that thing would kill me as I was walking out the door.
I remember that day. I named her Anna. She was my first love...
Today, I have fifty something species back there and looking back I can attest to the addiction, fascination and the ever "looking for more".

I stumbled on a crazy deal for a 3" guaranteed female P. Regalis for $30. I had joined the boards a couple months before and had been reading like mad about care and temperment and housing, so I felt I was ready for anything.
I rehoused her several times (with nervous sweats and shaky hands) and she grew like a weed. She matured just this past june into a beautiful 6.5" male. Jokes on me I guess. I sold 'her' for breeding.
Now I have some calmer new worlds, but I'm allergic to hairs, I'll be returning to the old world shortly I think.

I was in the eighth grade. It was the summer of 1980. I was visiting my Grandparents in Colorado. We went to a pet store in Denver and I saw a B. smithi. (Please Grandma! Please let me buy it!) I also bought the book "all about tarantulas" by Dale Lund with her. (There is so much wrong in that book it is a wonder the T survived!) She flew in my carry on luggage back to Wichita. She traveled with me to collage. Due to her hairy, eight legged influence my oldest daughters first word was "pider". Not mommy or daddy but "pider". I am sure this smithi was wild caught and I have no idea how old she was when I bought her. I had her seventeen years. She died in 1997. In 2005 I got online and looked up Tarantula to see what was on line. I ran into Arachnoboards and Botar (Oh my gosh! I am not alone! There are others out there and look what they have done!) Thanks to Botar I now have another B. smithi baby (along with fifteen others). My "pider" girl has nine of her own. Thanks to Arachnoboards and "The Tarantula Keepers Guide" I am confident my husbandry skills are light years ahead of where they used to be.
Luck to you and yours.

Wha??? Dale Lund's book is remarkably accurate for the time and still more accurate than the vast majority of books in print. I still keep a copy on my shelf for nostalgia's sake. It's right on substrate, temps, feeding, humidity, watering, and considering it was written in 1977, even OK for the breeding information in it.
Where it's misleading is the numerous photos that show some pretty bad ideas for husbandry, but the text itself, while missing details, doesn't have much bad information at all.

I was trying to tell about my first spider. I was just saying the hobby has come forward a long way in the last two decades. Compared to the book I have now Lunds book is inadequate. I realize there is much in it that is correct. As a thirteen year old boy I used the pictures a lot. Not all the text is the greatest either. Being a simple sort I still enjoy a book with pictures :) For its time it was not a bad book.
Luck to you and yours

My first T's were two A. versicolor. One died most likely because I changed her from enclosure... I didn't find anything suitable for her. When I put her on a better enclosure she didn't make any web and finally died.
The other one is fine, and has molted once and is eating fine.
Now I have two B.smithi and a single A.purpurea too. They all are tiny lings.

My dad had a B. smithi when I was lil growing up. That was over 15 yrs. ago, lol....I am now 27 yrs. old and bought my first T 2 months ago. Of course, because smithis were all I knew of:o , I bought anther one for MY first T. Within a week or two, I wanted more, though...joining this site and being able to see just how many there are out there and all the different species, colors, sizes, and temperaments made me lust for more;) ...I bought a B. boehmei after that to help start off my collection, and couldnt be happier...she is a beauty after recently moulting. I now own about 10 species, and they are wonderful pets.

And another vote for the good ol G. Rosea. S/he was a really cool little feller, didnt get upset about coming out of the cage. I didnt get my next T for almost 8 years after that one....but I am glad I did.
I got my first T from a guy that had her 5yrs. I bekieve it was probably already mature or close to it when he got it. I have had her going on 12 yrs. The thing I love best about her, she is always out where I can see her.

My actual first T was an Aphonopelma spp. back when I was around 5. At that time I didn't know there were other people keeping Ts! I didn't even know there were so many species. I didn't know till I was 15. Then I bought my Grammostola rosea, which is the T that led me here(I needed answered questions).

Chalk up another rosie, here.
Most will disagree but IMO this has to be the most boring T out there.
wow. I know they're reffered to as the pet rock, but you must really have gotten a bad one. lol. i got lucky with my two. one's really nice, and the other's really big. {D

I don't have a A.versicolor, but I heard they like to hide in their tube webs most of the time, so it wouldn't be the best choice for a visible T. I would go with an adult T of some kind like.. Acanthoscurria geniculata or Lasiodora parahybana.
Sorry for replying in an off topic manner.

I recently dove into the world of T-keeping and my first T is a G.Rosea named Charlotte.I didn't think I'd get another one but I've got a B.Smithi at the local petstore that I'm saving up for.Unless I can find one under $140 which is the price they are asking. The guy said they'd come down in price but
I dunno.We'll see.

First T was a P. murinus. Um, not a T I'd recommend as a first, but definitely one of my favorite T's. A little tough to learn on, my first rehousing was definitely nerve-wracking. But at least I'd researched it, and knew not to do anything stupid with it (oh yeah, like I did yesterday when I thought it was dead and tried to take it out of it's tank.:shame: Yikes!) Apparently I'm still learning:clap:

My first T is a A Seemanni purchased from Tarantulas Canada last sept.
She's a lovely pet rock with a temper. Now she's barricaded in her burrow and we're waiting for her to do something other than playing rock.

Subadult P. parahybana. She's the only T in my collection that I have named, which is "Fang Shui"
She's fully grown now, and have been trying to breed her for 3 years. Recently, I finally got an eggsac. Infertile, but still a sac.
