I was standing outside next to my house and looked to my left...and lo and behold, there is this spider... I have no idea at all what it could be! I'm going to assume it's a common type of spider so I hope my description here may lead to some link and possibly picture replies to help me ID it!! If it helps, I am in Rhode Island.

Description: Compared to it's thorax (erm, upper body?) it's abdomen is VERY large, and almost the shape of a sunflower seed if viewed from above, and slightly shortened. It looks like it eats well too! The upper body is a pale color, the not-quite-clear whitish grey, and it's abdomen is a dark grey-green color, almost the like color of the yolk of a hard boiled egg (where they aren't white or yellow, obviously). The legs are thin, and hairless as far as I can see, with black tips to them from the last leg joint to the end of the leg. Same for the pedipalps. I have no idea how to give a measurement of body size, but I would say the whole package including leg span is less than the size of a dime.

So, any ideas? If it lives through the night (I caught it and asked a friend who knows spiders very well if toilet paper over the top of a cup would give it adequate oxygen for the night) I will try to answer any other questions that might help me ID it. Thanks for the info and wish me luck please!

Okay, just looked at it in a different light and now the abdomen looks like a dark pea green color. Thought I'd update it.

well, the toilet paper is providing more than enough oxy

you could probably get away with putting a small spider in a snapple bottle for a week, as far as oxygen consumption is concerned (it would probably die of something else, first though)

i'm sorry, i can't even guess at what your spider is :(
