I got this specimen as a 0.5" sling on 01-26-2003. 2-1/2 years later it's finally reached about 2.5" !! LOL.

Absolutely gorgeous spiders IMO.

Freshly molted ~2.5" Citharischius crawshayi.

Mine just molted, but this is all I usually see of it:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/beccamillott/Citharischius%20crawshayi/Sagan/DSC04604.jpg

It's probably somewhere around 1 1/4" - 1 1/2".

BTW - are there any other members of this genus?

The only other described member is Citharischius stridulantissimus. Strand described this as Monocentropella stridulantissima in 1907 but in 1985 Raven found Citharischius to be a senior synonym of Monocentropella.

You know that C. crawshayi is the third largest tarantula in Africa. Next after H. hercules and H. scepticus.

I bilive that my C. crawshayi female is very old since she is very big.

na H. hercules is said to become 10" in legspan.

T.blondi is said to be 12" in legspan.

I have also read that Grammostola pulchripes can atain a legspan of 12" but I dont know if that is ture.

Swifty has H. Hurcules on his pricelist. :?

Yes he probably has, same as many other European and US dealers. But it isnt a true hercules they are selling. Its most likley its a hybrid of two other Hysterocrates sp. or a misslabled Hysterocrates gigas/crassipes. The genus Hysterocrates is a complete mess.

I placed Tom's (Philth) male in my female's enclosure. He walked toward her burrow entrance and began to "vibrate" his legs. He had no response so he got closer to the burrow. He then proceeded to tear the silk lining at the burrow entrance. After doing so he went in the burrow halfway. The female came toward him and tapped once. She then followed him out of the burrow. They hooked up three times. During the last hook up she put all of her weight on him and bit him. She held on with most of her legs and flipped over in the process. She then turned over and took him with her down the burrow. I did not see any insertions because of the angle at which I was watching this. He did have enough time to get in some insertions so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Lasiodora,

Great looking female and interesting photos.

I have a captive-bred sling who feeds regularly on crickets and cockroaches. However, I have an adult female who drives me crazy because she's such a picky eater. She used to eat cockroaches but she's gone off them. I've tried mouse pinkies and mealworms as well and still nothing.

She looks okay and other members have posted that they can go for long periods without eating but how often do people try to feed them? Once every two weeks? And has anyone tried other prey items? After looking at those mating pics, I'm wondering if their preferred food is other tarantulas. If I have an adult male T die from old age, I could try it. Has anyone else tried feeding a dead T to a King Baboon?

I got two crawshayi, one adult and one juvenile. The adult is freshly molted and eats everything. The juvenile has just started eating after along period of not eating (abit like G. rosea). The smaller one had sealed itself in and one day it opened its burrow and continued feeding like normal.

Thanks Karen.
I don't have a set feeding schedule for her. I probably feed her once a week or once every two weeks (although now I will offer food more often incase she is gravid). She has fresh water available at all times. You may want to try earthworms. Or you can wait. She may be getting ready for a molt. There have been periods of times that she hadn't eaten in months. Her abdomen stayed the same size. Kings seem to be able to manage fine without eating for long periods. I wouldn't bother offering other spiders. Just keep an eye on her and be patient.

Now back to the pics :)

T.Raab
08-30-2006, 08:43 AM
Hi Ota,

there is one more described species, Citharischius stridulantissimus. It was described by Embrik Strand as Monocentropella stridulantissima and was transfered to the genus Citharischius due the great mygalomorphae work or Raven in 1985 as a result of the very long labium.
Strand had no type location given and the type species is lost in the WWII. (Along the WWII were many Strand-Types destroyed which are stored in the Stuttgart Museum)

The holotype of Monocentropella stridulantissima was male and a female is not known. The reverse is given in Citharischius crawshayi, male unknown, female described by Pocock.
So maybe Strand had described the male of C. crawshayi, what is pure guess. The most work of Strand is in moderen view total useless.

Little bit of a bump here.

A lot of people here are claiming 9'' for their KB that is too coincidental to me, because the species generally maxes out at 7-8.

Any proof of these 9'' monsters, they really don't look 9'' from the pics.

Largest I have owned was almost 8'' in the past.
