Are there ever arachnogatherings in Texas? To me this seems like one of the best places to have "hunting" parties (whatever they are called). There are also several members of AB that live in Texas and im sure that we could think of a great place to host one. If anyone has information about meetings in Texas, please inform me...or shoot me down with reasons why it shouldnt be here

I'm moving to Austin soon and none of my friends would ever want to go on a hunt with me. So I'm game! {D

There are a least a few of us in Oklahoma that might be amenable to traveling south for a gathering.

I'm in the Austin area, let me know where and when. Thanks
I'm about 1.5 hours west of Austin, but could easily meet there.

How far away is rockwall from EP? =D
lol anyway...
I hope they do make some gatherings here. I really would like to get my T's ID'd. And hunt some, as well. Although Carlsbad isn't such a bad location tho. Only 3 hrs from here.

I'm game for having a get together in Texas. I have a few good places to go hunting. Even if it is only A anax's here in west Texas....

Hi Mr Ed,
Aphonopelma anax does not reach west Texas. They are located in south Texas. West Texas species include Aphonopelma steindachneri (Pecos County), Aphonopelma hollyi (Lubbock, TX), possibly Aphonopema texense (Rio Grande area of west TX), and a whole mess of undescribed/ unconfirmed species along with several unknowns that share distribution in New Mexico.
Take care,

Are there any pics anywhere so I can try to positively ID what I have? I've always been under the assumption that these (well most of these-I've seen a few variants here) were Anax's. Are the differences so small that they could be confused with other similar sp.?

There's no pics of the west Texas species around that I know about. Even if there were it wouldn't do you any good with identification. The differences between A. anax and the other brown North American species which look similar are definitley noticeable; the catch is that the differences are in the characteristics that can only be examined with a shed skin or a dead specimen under a microscope. Examples of these characteristics include but are not limited to shape of a male's embolus, shape of the tibial spurs, shape of a female's spermathecae, position of spines on the legs, amount of scopulation, division (or lack of) of the scopula, etc. There are no differences viewable with the naked eye that will jump out at you and tell you it is a certain species. Even if one obtains the available species key, it still takes the appropriate experience to determine what species sits in front of you due to the majority of available information being vague and/or incomplete in some way.

I caught a mature male recently that was solid black, I'm assuming that this is just another one of the numerous sp. out here. I actually posted a pic of it on here somewhere. This was the only place I've caught this particular sp. I'm wanting to come across a female.

Best of luck finding a female; they will be hard to find. ;)

So did us Texans and any of our neighbors (NM, LA, OK, etc.) ever decide on a gathering time or place? I'm only 5 hrs away from Carlsbad if they have the ATS there this year, or is it going to be back in Pheonix again?

I live in San Antonio and would love to go collecting{D If there is a chance i could get some centipedes i would search forever untill i found at least 4.
just tell me where and when I will be there.
Oh and if we do it before arachnocon we could all get some experience under our belts and get to know what to look for when we go on the collecting trips. just a thought

Okay i think we should have some sort of gathering before arachnocon. It is starting to get hot here and bugs are beginning to come out (caught a mature male for my female A axax today). I'm thinking we should meet and hunt at a lake, possibly lake Travis? Around lakes is where I have had the best luck with centipedes and scorpions.
It would be really cool if we could get five or more people who REALLY want to have a soar back from flipping rocks over.
I'll organize it so we can really get this rolling, i check my pm's and email often so shoot me a PM if you are seriously interested in participating in a hunt in central Texas. We will need to set a date a couple weeks in advance so people can request off of work and what not.
I will edit this post to show everyone who wants to do it.
Sofar my friend and I are in.
