Hey,
i'm new here, i live in Belgium Europe
I bought this weekend 3 vietnamese rainbowmilipedes, cute little ones (about 4cm), but i can't see if they are females or males?

How big does a milipede have to be, to be 100% sure it's a male?

I've also have 8 adult ArchispirostreptusGigas (about 27cm) and 5 Chocolate milipedes (about 15cm), by these species i can see clearly the difference between males and females, could use some help,....

greetz Steven

PS: sorry for my sloppy Englisch

Welcome to the group! :)

=D
Your English is pretty good.
Read what you posted, I think you answered
your own question;)
I keep a few millies too, they are bigger than
yours, so I can't give you an exact age.
I think it's more than a year, not really sure
though. As you said, you will be able to see,
when they are large enough:}

thanx,
now i know i just have to sit and wait for them to become bigger,
Is there really no other way to determine a gender of a milipede???

Male millipedes have their sex organs on the underside of the 7th segment (I think it's the 7th, anyway it's one of the ones closer to the head). This segment does not have legs, so if you're able to GENTLY unroll the pede, look for a gap without legs and you'll know it's a male. On larger specimens, you can see the actual gonads.

The tricky part is getting them to uncurl long enough to check. If you put them in a clear container, you might be able to examine the area without handling the pede.

Hey, thanx,

i just found out that one of mine rainbowmilipedes is missing a pair of legs about the area of the 7th segment, so i do hope this one is gonna turn out to be a male, can't see the gonads, but hopefully they grow fast
