New Animal Species Found in Calif. Caves Wed Jan 18, 9:17 AM ET

Spiders, centipedes and scorpion-like critters are among the 27 new animal species that biologists have discovered in the dark, damp caves of two Central California national parks, officials announced Tuesday.

The finds were made during a three-year study of 30 caves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. Many of the creatures live only in caves — and some only in one particular cave of Sequoia and Kings Canyon, according to the study, conducted by park staff and biologists from Austin, Texas-based Zara Environmental .

"We thought we might find a handful of new species," said Joel Despain, cave specialist for the parks. "It was amazing to find 27."

Park officials said the cave-dwelling invertebrates can tell scientists a lot about environmental problems or changes because of their sensitivity to surroundings.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have 238 known caves.

The SoCal peeps should be out trying to collect some of these before they are protected and lost from the hobby.

I love these guys. I remember finding a particularly large and colorful longhorn beetle, easily larger than our Palo verde root borer, around my Grandmas house in Mexico and upon trying to photograph it laterally, found 2 of these little buggers on board hitching a ride to some new home.

They are truly cool little inverts.

I encourage next time any of you guys find a beetle or flying insect, to inspect all around its body parts to see if they have these little stow-aways.

Pseudoscorpions are tiny arachnids, not really scorpions.

besides Chris, we're too late already, they were found in National Forests so technically they were protected even before they were ID'ed:( maybe if we found some outside the park tho....:D
