I caught this in the woods, Montgomery County MD. Easily the biggest spider I've ever seen wild in the state, but i havnt seen many. It was keeping quite an impressive brood with eggs practically the size of corn kernels. No itsy bitsy spider. Also, if i release it by its eggs, will it care for them still? Will the eggs survive alone? Can i keep it for a while (and how, food etc)? Did I overdo the post image sharpening?

I think it may be a Dolomedes tenebrosus but could be wrong. There are some pretty good threads on species of "fishing spiders" so I'd suggest a search. I don't have any experience with them otherwise I'd give you some care info.
Nice spider. Good luck with it. :)

just wanted to point out that i was astounded when i found the spider sitting on a web netting entirerly convering a large water supply i added to its terrarium
it is right next to the surface level and when the spider goes on it it looks like its walking on the water
so amazing!
