Hello,

For those of you who are unaware, I have a forum dedicated strictly to the discussion of tree-dwelling theraphosid spiders [aka arboreal tarantulas] and their kin. This small group enjoys membership from some highly knowledgeable specialist keepers and is the place to share and acquire information on genera such as Avicularia, Cyriopagopus, Heteroscodra, Iridopelma, Pachistopelma, Poecilotheria, Psalmopoeus, Stromatopelma, Tapinauchenius and more. Please come and join us!

Please note that this forum is strictly moderated and only on-topic discussion is permitted. There are two primary rules: post about arboreal tarantulas and their kin only and your user name must be your actual name. The latter rule has been implemented to make the forum more personal while adding accountability and credibility to posts.

Check it out at http://www.arborealtarantulas.org!

Cheers, Michael Jacobi

A bit about my pinktoe

About 2 months ago we picked up our first, a pinktoe (avicularia is what i'm understanding). I have found that our set up is good for her but not what I would like for her, so we have built her a better sized habitat with more height. she currently has a basic aquarium that we were told was fine with some drift wood. So, the new habitat is closer to 16 inches high. But, I was wondering what would be good to put in the pen that would be safe for her to climb on?

But any ways, I was a bit worried as to her health, because when we picked her up, the person handling her was not very good at it. We didn't think she would make it out of the store. He did not know the last time she had been fed, we put her in our pen and some crickets shortly thereafter. and she did not miss a moment and grabbed them 2 at a time, when she could. Within a month she stopped eating and now a month later, she has molted and is eating again :D . Her body measures about 2 inches, leg span about 4 1/2 inches, so, i'm thinking a girl. I could not tell much from the moulting (inexperience speaking), but heard, that she is bigger than a male would normally get.

Would love to hear from anyone that might be able to tell me if my information is correct or if you would have more information that might be of use, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm so glad I found this site. Thanks again.

Oh and I didn't have any luck on the site either..

He closed down the site several months ago when he moved cross country. I have been waiting since then hoping the site would re-open.

I would reasonably assume you have Avicularia avicularia (AKA Guyanan Pinktoe). As an arboreal height is important, seems though you have that covered. With avics humidity is also very important. Keep the humidity at no less than 70%. Other than that they are simple and a very enjoyable species that is also very handleable. Basicly just keep doing as you are, just make sure you have the proper humidity.

Thank you very much. Yes, she is a avicularia avicularia.
