View Full Version : Acanthoscurria geniculata

Noting the popularity of Acanthoscurria geniculata, I figured that this thread would be nice.
"Genics" have all the qualities that make great tarantulas, great. They are very attractive, and large. Not major hair flickers, and not bitey. They have the best feeding response of any tarantula, sometimes eating the same day before a molt. They're also a great display species, tending not to hide, but hang in the open.
Rather than posting the "wow, nice genic" comments, post pics instead.

Jon,
Sorry, I totally forgot about addressing your question.
My female genic is about 7". All ass, too.
I keep pumping them (food items), in the hopes that this would let her know that this would be a great time to lay some eggs.

Here's my little'n. Here's hoping to be a female. Quite the eater. The first time I fed her I didn't have the tongs half way into her cage when she jumped onto the tongs and grabbed the cricket. I knew from that moment that this would be my favorite T.

Heres a pic of mine
I got him/her last year, at about 1.5" legspan, now it's approaching 5" and starting to get more defination in it's colour...
I tried getting one of it eating a mouse last night but the angles were dodgy, and when my Geniculata is eating, I leave it well enough alone...
Enjoy!
I WISH YOU PEOPLE WOULD STOP POSTING THESE GORGEOUS PICTURES!!!!

I got my Geniculata earlier in the year from the guys over at E-Spiderworld but not online, at a Reptile Expo and guess what.....the next one is the Saturday after this one...Yay! Hopefully they will be attending this one also. I think I may just be able to cross off a few that are on my wishlist.
BTW, my Geniculata is still small but considering that it was a speck when I got it, it is doing pretty good.
p.s.
Whatever happened to Flannery anyway? She was the one I dealt with and she gave me some pretty good deals.

I think Dafne has the biggest T butt to carapace ratio I have EVER seen! What a huge T butt!! I have wanted to get this species since the first day I saw it, but I didn't want to get a sling.... Now I am reconsidering, because this is such a hardy species, and fast growing to boot!
Maybe I ought to order one before it gets too cold! :D

This is not a species to be a bit concerned about as a sling. They are hardy, voracious eaters and they grow fairly rapidly. It is truly one of my all-around favorites.

Hi George,
NOT my Genic. He's a boy, about 4" now. He's totally lost his appetite after his last molt which was about 6/22/04. He's SO scrawny and skinny, and I am SO worried about him. I love that little guy - and don't know WHY he's not interested in food. He'll kill his prey, but won't eat it. I've tried silk worms too, to no avail. I'm attaching a picture of my "hair-kicking" boy. His name is LINK.

Hi Wendy,
From the pic of Link,I can't see any boxing gloves,so I'm assuming he hasn't hit sexual maturity, yet. So it's very puzzling, and obviously worrying. As you probably know,it's quite common for mature males to stop eating and just waste away, but in sub-adults,it is strange indeed.Hopefully, somebody else may have had similar experiences, and be able to shed some light on the subject.

Nice pics all! Wow, I must have an oddball. I'd heard what great "display" Ts they are and that they are voracious eaters. I bought a 4.5" female about 15 months ago and must say of all my Ts she is the most, uhh, "disappointing." Don't get me wrong - cool animal - but nothing like the behavior I expected. The blondi and parahybana I bought on the same day (4" and 6" females, respectively) are great feeders and have both molted twice, but the genic eats like a bird and has only molted once, about a year ago. In fact, she is easily the pickiest eater of all my inverts. She's about 5" now. I've thought she's in pre-molt for the last 4 months. Appears healthy but no appetite. She took a couple of fuzzies in the first couple months I had her but lost interest in those quickly. For the last year I've offered her a cricket or two ever week and usually end up removing them after a couple days since she just climbs the glass and hangs out there to avoid the crix. Maybe she's more temperature-sensitive than the others? They slowed down a little over the winter but not significantly, and are as hungry as ever now that it's warming up some. Not the genic - she's picky and fussy as always :? Anyone had a genic like this? I don't know the exact temp range in the habitat but it's the same room in which all my other tropical inverts thrive. Weird.
