View Full Version : Arachnoquickie #3 - How Many Slings?
MrDeranged
05-15-2003, 08:32 AM
Hey All,
Through a generous donation of slings from Tony (Monantony) we here at Arachnopets are able to have another contest. :D
The Prize: Well, there will be 7 that will be listed at the end of this post but they will all consist of Lasiodora parahybana slings
The Rules:
The guesses closest to the actual amount of slings wins.
The contest is only open to members currently living in the U.S. If you're from anywhere else and have a shipping address in the U.S., then you are also eligible but the slings will not be leaving the continental U.S. from us.
We are going to try to pay for shipping, but due to circumstances beyond our control, winners may be required to pay for their own shipping. If this happens, winners will be notified as soon as we know
Only one guess per member. Don't pick the same number as someone else or you will be DISQUALIFIED.
In the event of a tie, we'll think of something :) (some kind of tie breaker most likely)
Guesses can be posted until 11:59 pm EST Sunday May 18th. The winners will be announced on Monday May 19th when I get around to it :)
The prizes will be:
1st place (closest to the actual amount) 20 slings
2nd place 15 slings
3rd place 15 slings
4th place 10 slings
5th place 10 slings
6th place 5 slings
7th place 5 slings
If someone actually gets the exact amount of slings, they will get an additional 20 slings :D
Happy Guessing,
Tony & Scott
BTW, here's the pic for those who might not remember it :)

Ok, for real, if I got the exact number of spiderlings and ended up with 40 of em..... it'd be like whoa. You are a brave brave man for separating those, Tony. You're my hero. :D

I actually did count every last one of those B#*%# !
Every night I would do xxx more... IT wasnt too bad, kinda therapeutic actually. I ended up with about 12 little corpses so they didnt count, and I imagine my margin of error was quite small actually, i did them in 25 count increments etc etc..I plan on maybe dumping out a couple cups and verifying my count before the contests end. And it was one eggsac BTW....The last 100 (there's a hint, at least 100 ) were the worst as they were scattered everywhere in the aquarium, in tiny little crevasses etc...Search for the parahybanas galore thread, there's a pic of the actually eggsac in my hand....Female was a solid 6.5" btw for you educated guessers.....

Hey All,
Couple of things.
First of all @ Tony: In person DOES NOT count. His guess needs to be posted in the thread.
@ Members from Outside the U.S. (namely Stu and Orion_DV8): I need to know ASAP whether or not you have somewhere in the US to have the prize mailed to if either of you win. I need you to either post in this thread that you do in fact have a US address to ship to or to send me a PM stating the same thing. If I do not have an answer by the time I am ready to announce the winners tomorrow morning, then you will be automatically disqualified. I apologize for this, but I cannot take the chance of taking the prize away from someone who can have it shipped to them on the off chance that you may have a valid shipping address.
@All: Once again, entries will not be accepted past 11:59 pm EST May 18th. Hurry up and get those guesses in. The winners will be announced sometime tomorrow morning. Probably between the hours of 9 AM - 12 PM EST.
Once again, a special thanks to Tony for being very generous in supplying the slings for this contest.

Hey All,
Guess it's about time that I announce the winners.
There were actually quite a few of you that got close, but "There can be only 7". ;) (Bad Highlander Pun)
In 7th place for 5 L. parahybana slings we have:
Will7128301 (Guessed 2957) = 352 away
In 6th place for 5 L. parahybana slings we have:
Dafne (Guessed 2350) = 255 away
In 5th place for 10 L. parahybana slings we have:
Hampton AKA That_Guy (Guessed 2800) = 195 away
In 4th place for 10 L. parahybana slings we have:
Big Sam (Guessed 2751) = 146 away
In 3rd place for 15 L. parahybana slings we have:
Big Dragonfly (Guessed 2500) = 105 away
In 2nd place for 15 L. parahybana slings we have:
Pronty (Guessed 2507) = 98 away
And Our Grand Prize winner for 20 L. parahybana slings is:
Disturbed One (Guessed 2619) = 14 away
For those of you who haven't added or subtracted it up yet, the grand total of slings in the eggsac was a whopping 2605!!!
If you are one of the many that didn't win, hold on for a second, all is not lost yet. Tony also requested that we have a special prize for the person who was the furthest from the actual amount of slings. Sometimes it pays to be really really wrong :)
The winner of the Booby Prize (20 L. parahybana slings) is:
Longbord1 (Guessed 4550) = 1945 away
Please PM or email me your Names and Mailing Addresses so we can work on getting out your prizes.
Once again, I'd like to thank Tony for sponsoring the contest. THANKS TONY!!!
Congratulations to our winners and to the rest of you, better luck next time.
Speaking of next time, a new Arachnocontest will be starting this Wed at 8 PM EST. There should be some minor details up before then. Keep an eye out. :)

Tony, massive mailing effort?? Maybe so, but damn, I do not want to be you when it comes to feeding 2,605 slings. That is just simply mind-boggling to imagine the amount of time and pinheads it takes to feed them all.

:) how long did it take to seperate them? let alone feeding time:eek:
congrats to the poeple who won :)
How long to seperate-good question...I developed a rhythm and system...I started putting 25 into a 40 dram vial and if done gently they seemed to file in one after the other ,rarely wandering back out..then I would shake them into a deli cup and tally them up. I would have to honestly say it took about 4 hours, over a period of several days. It did go alot smoother than I thought, I would take out a 'bivouac' of them (they webbed together alot) and put it on the carpet. Then I would just work that group till i was done.
