That's a Praying Mantis,possibly female and probably a Tenodora Sp. (Chinese praying mantis).:)

Its not a Mantis religiosa? The European or "Praying" Mantis
Protected in Connecticut due to their valuable role as insect pest predators.
The one I found is larger than my hand, is that larger than normal?

I agree with Johnny. The wings look very Tenodera like...as does the large size. If it is for some odd reason a M. religiosa you should see a black dot with a white center at the base of the forelegs.

i live in CT and i ve never seen a religiosa but ive seen LOADS of tendora. So ya there common in CT. They were introduced in 1895.
