Just out of curiousity, is there a list anywhere, or in any good book that describes the origin of tarantula latin names? I know most are given due to a characteristic, or named after someone, but boredom and whatnot makes me wonder if I could find out all of them, or atleast most.

Sheesh, doesn't anyone ever check the links section on this site? ;)

In the tarantulas section of the links page, there's a link for "The World Spider Catalog"

It's written by Norman Platnick from the American Museum of Natural History in NY. It is "THE" reference manual for latin names. If it exists, it's on it.

For those of you that are link page challenged ;P , here's the link:

You mean there's a link list? ;) ;)

I think everyone probably looks at it a few times, but who would think of looking there when you need to? Are you expecting humans to behave rationally? I know better, I'm a college professor <ducking> ;P ;P .

Nice site, by the way. As a taxonomist (plant taxonomist, that is) I love it.
