Arachnocon North - take 2.

I called the hotel today (the number provided on the site) to book a room. The person on the phone was clueless about the code "Aracnocon" and couldnt find any info on it. He eventually gave me the number for the headquaters and said I need to call them. Sure enough , headquaters told me I need to call the hotel directly to book a room using a code.

I guess I'll call tomorrow and try to get someone else on the phone.

Just had a talk with the hotel and it should be straightened out. If anyone gives you any trouble with the name "ArachnoCon" then try the conference number 306950. That being said, it was explained that the guy at the front desk is new and now knows what to do so you should be fine.

If you have any addition problems, please give me a shout and I can talk to the person who deals with events.

Thanks Dave, I called back and got a woman this time who was just as clueless as the first guy. She counldn't find any info on it with either the code or the conference #. I asked to speak to a manager or somebody and she came back on the phone saying she found it. So no problems, Im all set.

I live like 5 mins from the hotel, so any out of towners who are planning on making the zoo trip can catch a ride with me. I probably have room for about 4 to 5 people.

It has come to my attention that there are ongoing issues with the hotel reservations. If they cannot find the conference code ArachnoCon, please try code 306950 as that appears in their system.

Also, it has come to my attention that we somehow ended up on the same weekend as Toronto is hoting the G20 summit. I would strongly recommend that people book their hotel rooms as soon as possible.

The short answer is that you can't.

The long answer is that if you were driving across the border you could make arrangements with the USFWS do to a personal importation. Canada has no laws against export, but the USFWS requires a permit.

You can't take animals aboard the plane and you can't just check them in your luggage. You can ship them, however, but to do that you need to have them come into a designated port and have them USFWS inspected as with the border post. If you happen to be flying into a designated port regardless then it might work. Otherwise it will be a giant pain. Best bet if you're serious is to contact the USFWS and the airlines.

Or you could just show up for the socials and lectures. When we went to ArachnoCon in '06 we actually arranged for a registered export and it all ended up somewhat mucked up so I wouldn't do it again. Too much bother.

Based on who has paid, talking with folks etc., I'm anticipating a group of maybe 25 or so for the zoo trip and maybe 40 for the lectures. Smaller than I had hoped, but a very good group of people. There are a couple of chunks of people who are either liable to show up en mass or not at all. We could be at 50+ with a little luck.

The group rate is something the zoo has set up for larger groups of people. It has nothing to do with the conference per se, so there is no reason that the rest of your family wouldn't also enjoy the discount .. though your young'un gets in for free anyhow.

I am going to do my best to be at the zoo trip (with my 2 kids) but it all depends if I can get my husband to work and have the car that day, otherwise I will be at the social for sure the friday night.
