Hey I just caught this mantis outside my house, but I know even less about them than I do about spiders. Can anyone tell me what species this is--and if it's a male or a female? Thanks in advance!

It was probably looking for a mate. They mate and then die. It looks like a male so it will either die of the cold, old age, or get its head bitten off by the female.

When it starts getting cold I would let it go.

Tenodera sinensis, maybe subadult, so it wasn't looking for a mate. Mantis sexing guides are all over the bug-related Internet. If kept indoors the females can sometimes live into January.

I thought something seemed wrong with its leg. I found it hobbling around on it sort of awkwardly before I picked it up. :(

I've had captive ones mismolt and come out that way (or worse...), but I've never seen a wild one with it! Didn't notice until you pointed it out.
