Reputed to not do well in captive situations at all. They are an ecological niche animal that requires pretty exacting circumstances to thrive. Only described properly in 2009.
http://bugguide.net/node/view/2018/bgimage Araneus bicentenarius can be as big and can be found there in SA, I find them here in the Austin area, pretty common in east Tx in wooded areas. They make really big webs too, that's a problem with housing them. I've let bicentenarius go in my yard and watched it while it made giant webs every night between two trees so there's something you could do with that if you were interested enough.
