If you still have it, can you get a pic from below? That would help to distinguish between carolinensis and a couple of the other big species that occur in the southwest.
Hogna carolinensis for sure. I'd let him go, since it's a boy, but any females you might find would make good pets. If you find a female within a day or so, you could see if she'd mate with your male, but that's about all he'll be interested in doing before he dies at the end of the season.
