A while back, I started a thread commenting on the increasing awesomeness of the Wikipedia article on millipedes. I just recently checked back in on it and thought I would share this awesome collage of different millipede morphologies that somebody has made the headline photo for the article. Also, be sure to take a peak at ehe Classification section of the article, as it has been beefed up considerably. Check out those sexy phylogenetic trees! As I said in the other thread, if anybody from this forum is contributing to the article, please keep up the good work!

The one in the middle of the collage looks more like a centipede then a millipede to me.

That centipede right in the middle of the headline image really makes the "millipede" page look bad except it is a millipede if you look closely.

Zoom in. I see 2 pairs of legs per segment and no terminal legs, looks like a centipede mimic to me. Pretty cool, I had no idea there was such a millipede! I really wanna know more about it.

Edit: Whoops, Elytra and Antenna beat me to it!

I would have thought that was centipede too, except for the fact that I've seen pictures of centipede mimics before, lol. Its easy to assume that millipedes are incredibly homogenous when it comes to morphology (i.e. tube with legs), but there really is quite a bit of variation, as showcased by that collage. I sort of wish they had added this guy (Anastreptus strongylotropis constrictus) to the collage, as its the only 'bumpy' millipede that I've seen.

I actually find a native millipede, Cambala sp., that has a similar texture to it. They get about 1.5 - 2 inches and have a fairly unique coil pattern. They coil from both ends into a C shape with coils at each end.
This image is pretty poor, but it's the best I can find. http://bugguide.net/node/view/43929/bgpage
I've tried keeping them before, and they've survived pretty long in captivity, but I never saw any babies. I'll probably give them another shot sometime soon.

Wow, that's really cool! Thanks for sharing! There are so many millipedes in the world and not enough space in my apartment to keep them! Q.Q
