Just curious about which format people prefer. I'm talking longer lists with dozens of species either by a vendor selling them or on a website with information pertaining to care.
+1. A list of common names is pure chaos. You don't know what spiders they're talking about.Long lists done with common names are a bit of a pet peeve of mine, I often don't even bother reading the entire list as it takes to long to see if they even have what I'm looking for.
Totally agree.+1. A list of common names is pure chaos. You don't know what spiders they're talking about.
I don't use common names with beginners. For one, I don't know more than a handful of common names. Secondly, they're inconsistent; many species have 2 or 3 common names (they not standardized worldwide). Common names can apply to any similar-looking spider, which is part of the problem in using them: they're not specific. Some common names are just dumb sounding (gooty'). Many tarantulas don't have common names. It's a mess.Latin name definitely. Common names have too much room for mis-identification and the like. I use common names when talking to the "uneducated" about Ts, or nicknames when talking about them with my partner and co-collector (although we're both aware of their Latin names). But to anyone in the know generally it'll be Latin.
