I'm guessing by the screen name and location you are on Vancouver Island?

Easier to pin down with a location.

Striped Hawk Moth. I'll leave it to the experts for the proper name.

Yes, southern Vancouver Island.
To my inexperienced eye I think it looks like a striped hawk moth after an image search.
i think they look pretty awesome.

Try posting this on bugguide.net. That is a much more reliable source for identification pictures than arachnoboards.

I've heard that these guys can stridulate. I've never heard it, but they can make a noise when annoyed. I imagine it sounds like a tiny vuvuzela. :)

Great find!

The lady who is holding it said she thinks it is a white lined sphynx moth.
Thanks for the replies, hope to find some more critters to post.

Larvae are said to click their mandibles when angered and attempt to bite, sometimes. But i've never seen this.

I do know the adults actually will try to jab you with their rear tibial spines if you touch them though. Can actually hurt a bit with larger specimens. One large female i raised actually drew a little blood that way.

Hyles lineata is a wonderful species to raise.
