I love seeing these, they're becoming quite rare. They were the original honeybees brought over from Germany centuries ago, and have since become naturalized. They are the subspecies Apis Mellifera Mellifera. I suspect that their genetics have worked their way into modern stocks of A.m. Ligustica, because I've seen dark bees resembling them in my hives of Ligusticas. Beautiful subspecies, I wish someone would bring them back into culture.
