I have seen it both ways. Platnick lists it under calcelatum. I think that calcelata is older name, but I have no idea why it was changed, because genus Stromatopelma is clearly female gender and female gender in latin should be calcelata. For calcelatum it should be Stromatopelmum ...

If you have any idea, please explain ... Thanx! Btw. I love pics on your web, great one! :)

Actually despite her reputation, this one is very calm. I never saw a threat posture, even while I was arranging her for these pics ... She acts more Pokie way ... Bit skittish, but not bitey.

Hi,

i cant follow you... i'm sure S. calceatum is correct.

Whats about: Brachypelma (angustum, auratum, epicureanum, fossorium, sabulosum) ? - All not correct ? ;)

Take a look at this:
FINKE, T. (1998). Bemerkungen zur Taxonomie, Haltung und Nachzucht von Stromatopelma calceatum griseipes POCOCK, 1897 (Araneae: Theraphosidae: Stromatopelminae). Arachnol. Mag. 6(4): 7-12.

I don't know, that's why I'm asking. I'm not saying that it's not right.
But in latin language:

gender / ending
male -us
female -a
it (??) - um

I don't speak latin, so maybe someone who does at least might clear that ..

Where can I get that ? Do you guys have any electronic library where you get it? Anyway, my german language is quite poor, although I'm able to understand some simple arachno-texts .

No, there is no online library - you have to order a copy. (There are several ways to do this - how to do ? Read here:
STRIFFLER, B. (2003): Literatur Recherche - was hat das mit Vogelspinnen zu tun?? DeArGe Mitteilungen 8(1): 14-18
<- you can download this for free here: DeArGe Mitteilungen 8(1))

Ok, thanks both of you ... I still have no clue why Brachypelma and Stromatopelma is neutral gender althought they apear feminine to me, but I'm not going to learn latin to find out .. :)

I would have thought "pelma" to be a neutral gender word too as it refers to the foot/feet iirc.

S. calceatum

I have had males mature in under a year. This is a very fast growing T.
The males do not have hooks but have a thick hairs on there legs.
These are called scopulae brush. There is a good artical on
www.giantbirdspiders.com/artical4.html
