    African Horned Baboon Spider

All you experts probably already heard of Ceratogyrus bechuanicus, Ceratogyrus marshalli, or Ceratogyrus Darlingi, but I am fairly new to the hobby and I am sure other new members would like to check it out. When i saw it, I thought it was sooo beautiful. The horn looks awesome! I know its an old world T and is supposed to be aggressive, but then again, so is my OBT, and so far so good

At first I thought it may be a joke, but then I found them for sale on http://www.southernspiderworks.com/Spiders.php

Man! Now I have to buy one of these

Does the horn do anything special for the T?

There are several theories to what the spider uses the horn for, and the most likely is what the canadian arachnologist Rick C. West writes:

"Back in mid-1986, I did a preliminary study of the 'foveal horn' from dissected Ceratogyrus spp. The results of this investigation were published in both the South African Spider Club Newsletter 2/3 and later in the British Tarantula Society Journal. Basically, I surmised that the foveal horn evolved to serve two functions; 1) it provided an increased surface area for the attachment of the dorsal dilator muscle (a powerful muscle attached to the top of the 'sucking stomach) which aids in drawing in liquified nutrients at a faster rate (sort of an eat and hide) and 2) it provided and increases area for the midgut diverticula to expand into during times of engourgement of nutrients or water .... basically allowed for more nutrient storage .... possibly aiding in it's adaptability to survive longer periods of drought in more arid regions."

I bought a C.bechuanicus about a month ago, and it has quickly become one of my favorite T's. I would look around for the best price if you are buying online. I have noticed a big price difference between dealers. Which species do you want to get? I'm thinking about getting a C.Marshalli soon.

I've seen the Ceratogyrus considered to be a good beginner OW species. I think people have usually been recommending C marshali. I have marshali and bechuanicus....someday I'll get more :P
Not on this website anymore. Find me on facebook if you need to get ahold of me.

    C. marshalli is on my list of must gets. Along with C. brachycephalus. From what I've read they're great webbers and grow fairly quick. I'll probably order mine in a few months. Really looking forward to finally adding an OW T to my collection.

I ordered a Ceratogyrus darlingi from Krazy 8s. And I definitely know what you mean BlkCat, I am pretty new here and I am already going Tarantula crazy. I started with my OBT, now I got an A. geniculata and a B. smithi (both slings). And the new guy should arrive within a week
